8.8 enough for 390rwh

Hi, New to the site! Looking for a couple opinion's. I have a 99 STEEDA Mustang (GT) with a ProCharger at 390 rwh,3.73's, 305-35-18 Nitto drag radial's. Will the 8.8 hold it or will i need to upgrade carrier and axles? On an ocasion i have a problem going in to third hard, it feels like it hits a wall (no grind juston't go in on the first try). It has a short throw shifter is it just the shifter not overcoming the syncro and i just need to shift harder? It is a street car but i just want to let her go once in a while with out breaking it. you should have the axle tubes welded for one you should install a 31 spline posi and axles and a T/A girdle you also may want to add a Swarr bar

Not sure of your weight but in our cars we have ran them well into the 6's (in the 1/8th) with factory 8.8's in 3,100 # cars. Not a real smart thing to do but we have never broken an axle.

Once we get a car into the 6's the first thing on our upgrade list would be the axles to either a 28 spline hardened with C-clip eliminators or something better. If we are looking for a lot more power and then we go 33 spline spooled Moser with C-clip eliminators and rear girdle. Being a DD I would suggest hardened axles with ARP studs, C-clip eliminator, support girdle and weld the tubes like already suggested.

As far as the carrier goes... it will hold more than most think with the proper axles, welded tubes and proper set up.

When welding the tubes do they need to be welded all the way around or can you get by with just the front and back on each side and what is the purpose of the C clip eliminator's? A knowledgeable pereson told me the stock carriers weak point is the spider gear's so if that would break it may not be to bad not like a broken axle that would clean out the fender and do a lot of other dammage. I am thinking for now axles, Weld tubes, Gear's and bearing's and clip eliminator's if needed. I weighed the car last summer and i think it was 3,200 with me in it so about 3,000 with no driver. The C clips are what hold your axles in. If your axle breaks then it can walk out and possibly do fender or other damage. C-clip eliminators minimize the possibility of that happening because they hold the axle in externally, directly behind your brake backing plate to be exact. I have several with them installed on them so next time I get one on the lift I will get a few shots to show ya.

Thanks, I know how the C clips work and what they do and i know what the 9" was like. Just don't know if it is nessary with my setup. Do you have to weld flanges on to the housing to hold the axles in or does the kit work with what is there also what does the kit cost? I am thinking of just going with better axles when i get to it. yep C clip elems and welded tubes a nice set of MW axles and a locker your good to go theres cars in the 9s with this set up.
