Replacing tranny fluid/filter?

Recently my car has been shifting roughly and at random times. My haynes manual says to replace the fluid and filter to fix the problem . A few people have been telling me that this will most likely hurt my transmission. if so i won't bother with it. My tranny is a 4r70w with 50k miles on it. So would changing these things solve my problem or hurt me in the long run?

also i bought the car at 45k miles and i don't beleive the tranny fluid and filter have been changed before.

edit: would royal purple max atf be good to use for the fluid?

who in their right mind told you that changing the tranny filter and fluid would HURT your car???

Bitch slap them for me please. Itll only hurt you if you fuck it up and dont put everything back together right as with everything.

Look in your owners manual if you have one. not haynes. I have it and some of the stuff is garbage.

the 2002 Owners manual says that you need this

Automatic Transmission Fluid: Motorcraft Mercon V ATF*; Ford Part Number XT-5-QM; Ford Specifications: Mercon V

*Ensure the correct amount of automatic transmission fluid is used. Transmission fluid requirements are indicated on the dipstick or on the dipstick handle. MERCON and MERCON V are not interchangeable. DO NOT mix MERCON and MERCON V. Refer to your scheduled maintenance guide to determine the correct service interval.

Automatic with 3.8L OHV V6 engine: 13.1L (13.9 quarts) Motorcraft MERCON V ATF

Also if the tranny fluid comes out to be a very dark red. its never been changed. compare it to the new and you can see just how old it is.
