transmission wont shift into 3rd

I have a 2000 3.8 automatic and it wont shift into 3rd gear unless i take off fast and dont stop till 40 then when i let off for a couple seconds it will shift. If i take off slow it wont shift but when i get to around 30 it like goes into neutral and just revs up if i touch the gas. i dont know nothin about cars and was wondering if anyone knew the problem thanks
