Dome Light

I'm not sure if this is really an electronic issue, but seems to me like it would be.

I was driving last night, and I needed some light so I turned the headlight knob in order to turn on the dome light on the inside. it wouldn't turn on. I assumed it just burnt out or something. So then I go to try to turn on the two little lights on the side of the centre one, and those ones wouldn't light up either. thought maybe I blew a fuse or something...
When I stopped the car and got out, opening the door caused the dome light to turn on, as it should, but just two minutes before it was just not turning on.
I later tried flicking it on manually and it all works again...

what the hell?

bad fuse or its shorting out

how do i find out where the short is?
