New Kenwood DDX-8017 DVD head unit...

I installed a Kenwood Excelon DDX-8017 in my 2004 Mustang. Here are some pics...

I used a Metra Harness 70-5521. It fits 2003-2004 Mustangs with the Mach 460 sound system ONLY. You'll have to visit Metra's website to find the correct harness for other year Mustangs. The 70-5521 comes with the main harness adapter for the head unit and the adapter for the amplified Mach 460 system.

I did the wiring and let a local stereo install shop do the actual fitment of the head unit. They didn't have to do any cutting to fit it into the factory opening (as I've been told by so many others that I did have to cut the dash).

So far I'm enjoying it. I'm still figuring out how to hook up the RCA cables to get the Mach 460 system working again. It doesn't have the Navigation function yet, I have to purchase that separately...but will be one of the next few things I get.

Found out I can watch DVD's when I'm driving if I simply ground the wire that leads to the emergency brake. I just found a screw behind the head unit, crimped a ring terminal to the end of the wire and attached it to the screw.

NOTE: I don't make it a habit of driving and watching movies...just something nice for the passenger to watch while I'm driving.

I'm amazed at the clarity of the picture of this head unit!

I am going to have a local stereo shop rip out the factory Mach 460 system and install a complete system using Infinity component speakers along with a pair of 12" subs (haven't decided on a pair yet). Not sure of the amp I'm using either...but I'm leaning towards JL Audio for the subs and amps.

I also need to purchase the Navigation unit and back-up camera. I saw another guy with a Saleen (replica) who installed the camera in the trunk door lock. He just uses his keyless entry fob to pop the trunk (I don't think I've ever used the key on the trunk anyway).

I should have a nice system by spring.

damn that is killer. one of my friends has an 05 mustang, and he has a dvd/navigation touch screen setup like you have for the head unit. he has 1 JL 12" sub in a custom wall-to-wall box in his trunk that is not too deep, but goes completely from left to right and looks awesome. his car audio sounds better than my home stereo system lol.

good work with the stereo stuff man.

Movie Voices

I have the same unit installed (DDX-8017) and love it. I have the KNA-510 Nav unit and Turk XM radio also connected. I'm thinking about going with the XM Smart antenna via KNA-510 Nav vice the HeadUnit SIRUS interface and see if I can get more of the radio station text to show up. I can only get about 80% of XM radio text to show up using the Turk unit.

OK, here's my question:

When I play a DVD Movie in this unit you can barely hear the speech audio, the sound effects from the rest of the movie are stunning, Helicopters flyiing all around my car and bullets whizzing past my head. I mean the surround sound is amazing, BUT when it come to speech I have to crank up the volume all the way to hear what is being said. I want to believe it's because I don't have the center channel connected. So I have purchased the powered center channel speaker and will see if that fixes the problem.
I want to say that I DO NOT watch movies while driving, but did go on a trip with the wife and she watched Bad Boys II (Ok I peeked once) and although I was impressed, we both agreed trying to hear the speech was a bit challenging and had to crank the system up to the max. But when the car wrecks came it nearly blew us out of the car (05 Mustang) Does anyone else have this problem and is connecting the center channel going to fix my problem? I have played with the audio settings till I'm blue in the face with no avail.

450W 6 channel AMP
12" powered Sub in the trunk

Got the powered Center Speaker installed and it fixed the problem with the low speech problem I was having. Now movies sound clear as a bell with the rest of the audio system pumping out the special affects sounds.
