Idle Issues with stereo.OK, so when I got my car it had a system in it but it was JUNK! The guy before me had some cheep ass K-mart head unit, a 1 or 2 gage power wire (that was running through the middle of the floor board, along with the RCA cable and remote wire) going to a 250w mono Rockford amp to 2 blown Rockford 10" subs with glue all over the cones holding them together in 2 home made boxes with overlapping corners! In the 3 days that I allowed that shit to stay in my car I noticed that when I turned up the volume the rpms would rise. After my tax return I went ahead and got myself a new system. Head Unit: Kenwood KDC-MP735U CD receiver at Crutchfield.com In The Dash: Infinity - Car Audio In The Doors: Infinity - Car Audio In The Back: Infinity - Car Audio I'm in the middle of building / installing a rear seat delete which is where I'm putting: http://www.cartronixplus.com/templat...20ALL%20%3E%20 And 2: Infinity - Car Audio I have every thing installed except for the amp and subs and when I was installing the new head unit I forgot about the volume issue so I hooked it up to all the same wires. now when I turn it up, the rpms go up as well. My car idles between 800-900 rpms but when the stereo is up it's closer to 1200-1300 rpms. Does anyone know what would cause this? I'm assuming it may be hooked up to the wrong acc / ignition wire, but you know what they say when you assume " it makes a ASS out of U & ME "

Sounds to me like your alternator or your battery are going bad, either that or you need a capacitor. My bet is the battery or alternator but you never know.
When the battery is getting low the engine will work harder to turn the alternator and charge the battery. If the battery is going bad it will be continuously losing the charge. Normally with a lower charge on the battery the alternator will make the engine work harder for a very small time and then go back to normal, because it doesn't take very long to charge. The alternator shouldn't need very much to run at its full capacity. If it is going bad it will need to work harder to charge your battery and run your accessories. Thus a slight raise in rpms. The best way to find the culprit is to either get autozone to test the battery and alternator, or find out from a fox body guy what the stock alternator amperage should be at idle(no accessories). If the alternator is running much less than it should be and the battery is for sure good then its the alternator. Since this is only happening at idle and with high volume it seems to me that your car is drawing more than it is delivering thus making the car work harder. If it is not the alternator or the battery, make sure there is no short circuits or such that can be continuously drawing current and if there is none invest in a capacitor. Good luck. |
