Stereo? 2000 v6

Okay, so I just recently bought a 2000 v6 convertible mustang from an old man that only drove it in the sun. (perfect condition- $5500, I shat my pants) anyway I proceeded to wrestle the stock stereo (consists of the 2 different units) out to install the kenwood unit from my old car. As I had put it in to my old car, i did not think it would be a big deal to do the same with the mustang...however... I have a harness and as far as I can tell everything is hooked up well. While the unit works fine, no sound comes out of the speakers. Additionally, when I plugged only the old radio unit back in without the cd player unit, the sound was crap unless both units were plugged in. Are there any audio guys out there that can help? I really need to have some muzak as I am about to go crazy.

so even with the stock stereo in.....it sounds bad? Also did you check to make sure everything was connected. There are i think 5 wires to hook up for the stock stereo. (well in my 2000 there is). Double check to see if they are all hooked up. If you can get a flashlight and look at the conditions of the harness to make sure they arent showing wear and tear. If they are showing wear and tear you may have some wires shorting out.

lol...no, it works fine if both decks are connected (one is radio/cassette, the other is stock CD player) but when ONLY the radio is plugged in (which appears to be the only thing connected to the actual speakers as there is just one cable that connects the stock player to the radio unit) the sound is flat and crappy, and i am thinking the somehow the power cord to the stock cd player (that is not used for the new deck i want in) must also control the factory amps... I am sorry if I am unclear about this but thanks for your help

Not unclear at all to me (a 21 year installer). The reason you did not have any sound at first is you may not have turned on the factory amp. If the harness you bought and used had two plugs (one squareish and one rectangular) the rectangular plug has all of your power connections. At one end of the connector you should have a blue/white wire. This is the amp turn on wire, and needs 5 volts to turn on the factory amp. Don't worry, if you use 12 volts to turn it on, it won't hurt, you just may get a "pop" when the system is first turned on.

The best solution to your problem is to ditch the factory amp altogether. Metra makes a plug that will do this (sorry I don't have the part number in front of me, I'm not at work right now) and wires into the speaker leads from the new radio and plugs into the factory amp output harness (obviously, it would need to be unplugged from the amp). Keep the power plug you already have, but you would only need the yellow, red, black and orange wires.

Now for the FYI as to what was going on with only the factory tape deck. The audio signal is started with the tuner or tape deck. It then runs THROUGH the Cd player then back to the tape deck to be processed (bass/treable/balance/fade) and then output to the factory amp. The reason it was "mushy" sounding, is you were only getting half the audio signal. In the '94-'98 cars with the premium sound without the CD, there was a plug in the back of the tape deck that kept the whole audio signal and IF you had one of those plugs, it would have sounded fine. Again, your best bet is to ditch the factory setup altogether. Curious as to know where the amp is? Look below the CD player. It is a silverish box about 5 inches by 4 inches with the cooling fins on one side and the connections on the other, facing forward.

I hope the info helps. Sorry it was a little wordy, but there is no easy answer.

my advise? ditch the stock system totally. get your self a decent set of speakers for it, pull the factory speakers out, rip the factory deck (both parts) out. Now just wire in your aftermarket deck like you normally would. 12V+ 12V+ switched Ground, speakers FR FL RR RL. that is probably the easiest way.
