SCT help please

I just got the SCT tuner for my 99 mustang gt. I've never used anything like this before and i have no idea what I'm doing. Anyways, my question is why won't it work past a certain point? I plug it in like it says, go through the vehicle setup, and when it gets to the "turn key on, do not start" portion, it won't connect and it says something along the lines of being timed out. It's like it won't connect to my car when I turn it on. Am I doing something wrong? I have no idea if I have a chip either because I don't know where the j3 port is. I know it won't work with a chip. Is there something wrong or am I forgetting something?

before you tune the car you need to erase your stock tune first so the xcal can lock in your vin.
and make sure you pull your fan fuse and your fuel pump fuse as well.
AND make sure you hook up a battery charger to your terminals before tuning.
if your battery dies while your tuning you could fie your computer.

How do you erase the stock tune? It said nothing about this in the instructions. Im so frustrated with this thing. The fuel pump and fan were both off. Any reason why I would be getting timed out?

damn it .. made me go out to my car and check...

anywho..

go to "program vehicle"

and there should be a "download custom tune" or something like that.

if it is the first time tuning you car the xcal will automatically erase your stock tune for you and make a file for it called "return to stock".

if it is not linking or "timing out" as you say. it sounds like you have a chip still in your car. you need to remove that before you can do anything with the xcal.

the j3 port is on the back of the computer which is mounted behind the passenger-side kicker panel. before you put a j3 chip on the computer you will want to remove the protective coating from the contacts.

ok this should not be to hard to explain...

say you get a cold air intake, or a new cam.
your a/f ratio will change.
if you run rich-you might wash off all the oil on your pistons..kaboom motor
if you run lean- your motor will get too hot and it will also go boom.

what a tuner does is fixes these problems via advancing/retarding timing or adding fuel after a certain rpm.

it maxes out your motors potential without hurting it.

a tuner is like a teacher for the special needs ecu that we know as the the mustang computer.

you need a tuner then.
you send your mod list to a tuner and he will send you back a tune through e-mail which you can plug your XCAL in to the computer to download. the XCAL has a usb port on the bottom of it.

once downloaded to your Xcal... go plug it into your car and downlaod the tune.

if you need a tuner i have a good one in mind.

dude you REALLY need to have it tuned by a pro.
and you can only give a base tune dpeneding on your mods.. if you want a really good tune you need a wide ban 02 sensor.

if you make one mistake with tuning it yourself you could blow up your motor.

this is the guy you need to contact.

http://www.shop.tricktuners.com 1-(800) 714-9204

he is my tuner and he is top of the line.

they are all the same thing... just differant explanations of what it does..
you can tune the car when it is stock and gain some moderate numbers.
the more you put on the more you tune.

you car if stock would gain about 17rwhp and 30foot pounds of TQ with the tune alone.
