Well, im gonna be the bastard child here...I'm putting a 2.3 out of an 89 stang in my rock crawler so some of you might want to hang me but oh well.....Ive got a few questions so maybe yall can help me out

-First, I have two motors, one i know for certain is an 89 model out of a mustang with the auto tranny..its leaking from every orifice and mating point on it so id like to avoid using it if possible....my other motor is a brand new freshly rebuilt 2.3 that I'm uncertain on the model, i had a carb'd manifold on it and the old school valve cover...do yall think yall could give me some hp/tq numbers on those and take a guess at the year on the second motor or tell me how to identify it.

-Second, The auto tranny i mentioned will be in front of a divorced transfer case...but thats irrelevant, my question is how durable are they? do you all have to replace them if any of you run them, im sure most of you have t45s and t5s but im sure theres someone out there with an auto....

-Third, was there a difference in the 87 ranger cams and the 89 mustang cams? id like to squeeze every little bit out of it i can without building it, it will be a propane setup so fuel is not a problem i can dump as much to it as necessary with the turn of a screw

-Fourth, in my experience with 4 bangers MSDs arent worth a damn, ive got a 6a, will it be worth my time to put it on?

-oh, and would the driveshaft from my 87 ranger 5spd spline up to the 89 auto tranny? i havent tried yet partially cause ive been lazy....so i figured id ask.
thanks for any info. -Trevor

Hey all. Found my way over here by a suggestion of a friend.

Anyway have a 92 hatchback 4cyclinder 5 speed for the 24 hours of lemons bought her for 450, drove home like a champ. few issues need to be sorted out but can't wait to race this thing.

will start a project thread soon but have some questions as I am used to Toyota's and my focus, not used to this old stuff ;)

1.

can someone tell me how to read this? I am used to simple blinks and that's it not the whole procedure that ford has set up.

2. are there any good budget upgrades for the brakes? brakes are outside of the $500 limit but my team isn't exactly overfilled with cash. we plan for SS brake lines but from there it is up in the air. the 15in rims will be staying if that matters.

3. I know about the pre-94 ranger header, the cleaning out or removal of the "snorkel" on the intake for some cheap horses, anything else that I should keep in mind for el cheapo power?

4. Is there any stock suspension parts off the GT that are worth having? (springs, sway bars, etx) thinking they would be cheap to pick up and durability and handling is more important than outright speed.

5. however that said, been poking around and reading up on some past LeMons racers what would be the cheapest, easiest way to install 4.10 gears on the car? I read the the ranger comes with them stock but the axle won't bolt on due to leaf spring vs coil suspension.

6. Lastly where is a good place to plug a water temp gauge and oil pressure gauge? Any how to's for a kill switch? these are also outside the budget limit and want to make sure I do them correctly.

and of course some pics of the ride, she ain't pretty but what do you expect for $450? at least the a/c, heat and cruise control work lol.

Thanks for any help and look forward to keeping everyone up on the progress

I'm new here and just by reading some of your stuff i can tell that soon ill be ready for that turbo with your help. but before i can even start to think about that i have a small problem. first it all started last summer, my car couldn't start so we changed the ignition switch and still nothing. later we found out that it might be the fuel pump so we replaced that and it worked! but than i got to school and i couldn't turn my car off. ha ha... the car was running with the key out. so i take it to a shop and they tell me it might be my muffler (because it back fired) so i replace that but it still does that. i need to fix this problem before i can do anything else. hell i dont even know if it'll pass inspection. so if u have any ideas of what it might be ill take a look at it. thanks

I just picked up a 1990 Ford Mustang LX 2.3L with 138,500 miles for my winter car.
The guy who owned it hasn't drove it in a week or so. He lived next to a lake.
Today I rev'd the car up in the drive way and some that looked like black with water shot out the exhaust. It did not smell like gas or oil or anti freeze. So what could it be? The car seems to run fine.

Okay, I have a decent amont of knowledge about engines but this one has me stumped and i cant find it in the repair manual.

I replaced my starter motor on my 91 2.3 mustang and reached down to show a friend where it was because he was interested I hit a flxible pipe attached to my exhaust manifold an it completely crumbled away. :o

The car starts fine and I'm getting it ready for certification but I have no idea what that part is any help? should I replace my header with the ranger header or get an aftermarket one? I'm looking to build a cruiser not a mad horsepower machine.

Cheers!
