You put in your vin number, and it gives you the factory installed options like engine, transmission, etc.

a vin is a vehicle identification number. but also, it holds information as well, as such:

location of final assembly
manufacturer
vehicle type
vehicle production number

a link i posted over on DTP

VIN Decoder
Here is your guide to interpreting universal Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs). All vehicle information applies to 1982 - 2005 models only. For previous model year VIN information, check sources at your dealership. Universal Vehicle Identification Numbers have 17 "positions." There is a number or letter in each position (see VIN Example below).

VIN Lookup
To use this utility, simply enter in a vehicle's VIN in the box below. The vehicle information applies to 1982 through 2005 models only. Once the VIN has been entered, click the Submit button, and a response page will appear with that particular vehicle's VIN information.

Position 1-3 World Manufacturer Identifier
Position 4 Restraint System Type & Brake Type and GVWR Class (Trucks and Vans Only)
Position 5-7 Line, Series, Body Type
Position 8 Engine Type
Position 9 Check Digit
Position 10 Model Year
Position 11 Assembly Plant
Position 12-17 Production Sequence Number
