VIN decoder


Do you think a VIN decoder would benefit here?

i think it would. a member could enter a VIN and find out if the car they are purchasing has the correct engine/tranny/color/interior.... especially good for the guys with classics IMO

I think that would be really helpful. If this is going to be the best mustang site on the net, you guys want to offer things that other mustang sites don't.

It would be helpful. I haven't seen one for Mustangs yet, but I haven't looked very hard either. I use them for Chebbys all the time though.

Anyone have a resource for decoding the VIN, as in a breakdown of the serial number? I can build a database once I have the information. I found a php program to do it, but I have to build the database.

i have one for the foxes. let me see if i can find it quick

ok this is what each number means. hope this helps. for an example i used my VIN for my 1992 mustang.


World Manufacturer Identifier (1-3) 1FA -Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company, USA; Make: Ford; Type: Passenger Car

Restraint System Type (4) C - Active Belts and Air Bags (Front)

Vehicle Type (5) P - Passenger Car - Ford North American Vehicles

Line, series, body type (6-7) 41 - Line: Mustang; Series: LX; Body type: 3-DR. Sedan Hatchback; Body code: LX3

Engine type (8) E - Liter: 5.0 SFI HO; CID: 302 ; Cyl: 8; Fuel: Gasoline; Mfg: Ford

Check digit (9) 3

Vehicle Model Year (10) N - 1992

Assembly Plant (11) F - Dearborn

Production Sequence Number (12-17) 101506 - Note: consecutive unit numbering began at 100001

But theirs more than that, different assembly plants, engine & body types, etc. I need an entire set of variables.

ok lets try this again. here is what each digit in the vin for the foxes from 82-93. cause all the 82 and up vehichles have 17 digits. ill search more for 94-05 but this is a start.

Digits 1-3 = World Manufacturer Identifier
all 1982-1993 Mustangs = "1FA" - FoMoCo, USA, Ford Passenger Car

Digit 4 = Restraint System
1982-1989 Mustangs = "B" - Active Belts (Manual)
1990-1993 Mustangs = "C" - Air Bag with Active Belts (Front)

Digit 5 = Passenger Car
all 1982-1993 Mustangs - "P"

Digits 6-7 = Series - Body Style
1982 Mustangs
"10" - 2-door Notchback (L/GL Series)
"12" - 2-door Notchback (GLX Series)
"13" - 3-door Hatchback (GLX Series)
"16" - 3-door Hatchback (GL/GT Series)
1983-1986 Mustangs
"26" - 2-door Notchback (L/GL/GLX/LX Series)
"27" - 2-door Convertible (GLX/LX/GT Series)
"28" - 3-door Hatchback (L/GL/GLX/LX/GT Series)
1987-1993 Mustangs

after some searching i found this VIN decoder for the years from 1994-2004


DIGITS MEANING

01-03 World Automobile Identifier
1FA - Ford, USA, passenger car
1FD - Ford, USA, incomplete vehicle

04 Vehicle Restraint System Type Code
L - Active safety belts all positions, first generation air bags
F - Active safety belts all positions, second generation air bags.

05-07 Vehicle Line, Series, Body Type (for Passenger Car)
P40 - Two-door coupe
P42 - Two-door coupe, GT
P44 - Two-door convertible
P45 - Two-door convertible, GT
P46 - Two-door convertible, Cobra
P47 - Two-door coupe, Cobra
P48 - Two-door coupe, Cobra

08 Engine Displacement/Number of Cylinders
4 - 3.8L, EFI, six cylinder
C - 5.8L, Cobra R, eight cylinder
D - 5.0L, Cobra, eight cylinder
T - 5.0L, H.O, eight cylinder
X - 4.6L, EFI (SOHC), eight cylinder
W - 4.6L, EFI (SOHC), eight cylinder
V - 4.6L, EFI (DOHC), eight cylinder

Always a numerical digit from 0 to 9

S - Pilot Plant at Allen Park, Michigan (USA)

This starts with 100001 at the beginning of every new model year.

cool, it would be awesome to have a program that someone could type their VIN number in to and the program then interpreted everything and split it up for the customer to see...

I can do that, but I have so many other things to do first. It's on my list though. Before I get to that though I need to get ALOT of articles up.
