Server Updates Underway

I say updates, not necessarily upgrades because we've been running so well. With no downtimes in the past 5 months and a server load usually in the 0.1 - 0.2 range it doesn't get much better... although we're running software that's becoming outdated. Linux RedHat 9, Apache 1.3, Mysql 4 and Php 4 are getting depreciated. So, I'll be upgrading to CentOS, Apache 2.2, Mysql 5 and Php 5 over the next day or two. Will likely result in better performance too, but I doubt it'll be noticed considering the server's not being taxed as-is.

They'll likely be some downtime, hopefully not more than 20 minutes but you never know. Hopefully no errors or bugs, but you never know.

Ok, that went pretty smooth. Only down a few minutes. Got CentOS installed now just have to update the rest of the software but that was the *big* deal.

Updated the caching function for the main part of the site, which will help slightly. Haven't updated php or mysql yet but will soon.

We're now running Php 5.2.5 and eAccelerator 0.9.5.2 (sweet). Downtime anyone? Nah, don't think so : ) Think I might stick with Apache 1.3 for now, but going to Mysql 5 in a bit.

would this cause me to stop receiving email notifications of PMs and replys to my subscribed threads? I've checked and rechecked all appropriate options and input areas in the User CP, but still I haven't been receiving email notifications for anything since early yesterday.

i checked, nothing there. i have changed no settings on here or with my email service. i haven't received anything since the site started slowing slightly yesterday. I assume that was when the updating was going on. Any other ideas for me? I'm at a loss

Hmmm... maybe need to setup the RDNS again for the email, must have not been copied over during the OS upgrade. Still though, gmail doesn't usually need RDNS (like hotmail) to get emails without issue. Either way, I'll get it sorted.

*edit* take that back. Looks like gmail has problems too now without a reverse dns being setup for the email. Will get it sorted.

Ok it's been done. Not sure if ISP's / email providers cache that data or not so it may take a few hours or a day to work again.

Yea that'd be one way... nobody could register : ) It doesn't really matter, he'd have to go through alot of trouble to get around our multi-account detection. But at any rate, GD is installed now so everything is back to normal. I didn't upgrade Apache or MySql to the lastest MAJOR versions (Just Php), everything is just running too darn good. So, we're on the latest 1.3x Apache release and 4.1.x release still but that's fine. I'll upgrade down the road if I get bored or something.

Give it a day or two and let me know. No reason for the mail to go undelivered, not on any spam blacklists or anything and the the site RDNS's back as it should. *edit - noticed something in Exim I didn't like, might have had something to do with it.
