If you want to get really pedantic, 'r' can sometimes be a vowel, too. The linguistic definition of a vowel sound is any sound that can be extended indefinitely, as opposed to a consonant, which has a definitive end (i.e. you can extend 'eeeeeeeee' or 'rrrrrrrrrr' for as long as you want, but not "ch").

Not in spelling English spelling requires one of the "normal" vowels be placed around it, though with words like "butter" or "church", you don't pronounce the 'e' or 'u' before the r, but the 'r' vowel sound; if they were spelled buttur or cherch you'd still pronounce the word the same way.

Here's the wikipedia article if you're interested, though: R-colored vowel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and 'm' can be too, but not 'n' - you continue a schwa (sp? the upside-down e thing...) sound

You're holding an 'e' sound. Saying the name of the letter is totally different

Ooops read the post wrong

No matter what word there is, its always going to have a vowel or vowel sound. Example Sky, Gypsy, Gym, etc... you see theses words have no vowels but a "Y" in it. However the letter Y stands for a vowel sound. Skie, Gypsee, or Jim (Gym)

off topic, but aren't there some african languages that use single syllable consonant-only words?
