Painting the underbody

Hello all. While at my friend Adams house today, his dad mentioned that he wanted to paint the underbody of Adams 2005 Mustang... I have an 02, but the idea is the same... This seemed odd to me at first because I have never heard of it done before, but seemed like a good idea because we live in Michigan... and salt is on our roads for 100+ days a year

He said painting it would preserve the underbody and help to prevent rusting. He mentioned that he was going to jack the car up, turn on a gas heater and let the garage heat up for a few days to 70 degrees, and paint the underbody of my friends Mustang with rustoleum paint.

Is this a good idea? Or is it a deathtrap for Adams Mustang? Would you recommend this or not? Thanks in advance.

Painting the underbody is a normal thing. Theres nothing wrong with it and it is a good idea. Especially for your area cause of the salt. It keeps moisture and other things away from the metal and provides a barrier to the outside world preventing rust.

We usually spray the underside of vehicles with spray on bedliner. Works great and stands up to more than just paint.

Only problem with bedliner is it makes working on the suspension tough sometimes.

We did the understand of my old car with bedliner and didn't have problems. I would recommend going that route.

It's more commonly known as Rhinoliner (main brand, like kleenex.)

Your biggest challenge will be to get under it and pressure wash the underbody to that you are not spraying over dirt.

This seems like a costly thing to do. The car was a Sunday driver when I got it in October... with a few thousand miles. Now it in the garage for winter and I never got to drive it too much. Will it take a lot to get the dirt and other shit off?

First, you need to clean the under body of the car. You need to get the dirt and crap off the bottom of the car before spraying.

I just installed subframe connectors on my car and EVERYTHING on the bottom of the car is already coated (had to grind a spot for the welder ground). I recommend buying some cans of rubberized undercoating. Nasty stuff that will get everywhere but very good for preventing rust.
