Bumper scratches dilemma- need advice
I just got my 05 GT about a month ago. I thought I looked it over really well, but evidently I missed a couple things... last night I had to drive through a horrific rainstorm, so when I got home I checked the car to make sure everything was ok. When I looked all the way underneath the front bumper area, I could see clusters of deep scratches- all the way down to the metal in some places. It's like this on both sides, and you can't see it unless you really get down there and look.
It looks to me like somebody drove the front of that car up over/against one of those little parking place curbs, realized they overshot it then backed up. Ugh!!! ![]() ![]() The scratches are way too deep for me to handle it myself- it needs a pro. So bottom line, what's the best way to deal with this and what do you figure it will cost? The way I see it I have 4 choices: 1. take it to a detail shop 2. take it to a body shop 3. I found a prepainted chin spoiler on American Muscle that would completely cover the area 4. god forbid... replace the whole dang bumper |

If the scracthes are down to the metal, no detail shop can help you. You already have all the possible solutions listed. Just need to decide which one you want.
We can't tell you an estimated price for a repaint of that. Prices are drasticly different region to region. Just go by a body shop and look for a quote.

I found a small mobile company that specializes in bumper work- they will come to my workplace and fix it right there for $245. I made an appointment for Monday- will post the before and after pics

Why worry since it's "way underneath the front bumper" unless you show the car. Scratches or not, CDC classic chin spoilers look good on our cars.

Ok I forgot about this thread... I read this board at work, so I'll have to put the pics up when I get home. But here's what happened. The scratches were truly godawful- doesn't matter if I show the car or not- believe me, when I put the before pics up, you'll see. You wouldn't want this on your car.
These guys came out to the parking lot-yep, that's right- parking lot. They had a van crammed full of equipment. They put my car up on ramps and in 3 hours called to tell me my car was done. I was charged exactly what I was quoted, and the job they did was amazing. You can't tell anything ever happened. The color match is darn near perfect, and the paint is smooth and clean. They did a tight job. I will get 'after pics up as well... |

Well, not too bad I'd say, I can't see too much except that those scratches were pretty bad to begin with. I'd love to see some shots with direct focused light (halogen work lights) or direct sunlight on them to truly see whats going on there. But if you're happy, that's all that matters. Thanks for posting those pictures.

The only camera I have is my iPhone right now- but I am picky- these guys did an amazingly kickass job- you really can't see anything but smooth glossy paint now.

See post #4. He became an overnight internet sensation for a similar thread.
douchephones take decent pictures (I have one as well). To really get a feel for how your paint is, anywhere on the car, take some isopropyl alcohol (70%) mixed 1:1 with distilled water, spray it on the car and wipe it down with a nice microfiber. This will safely remove any waxes or fillers from the paint, then you can take some light to it and see how it looks. |
