Porter Cable on it's way!

Hey guys! Just ordered a Porter Cable 7424 swirl-free kit with Wolfgang products and a Cobra waffle weave! This is my first true detailing kit purchase as I've only ever purchased OTC products.

I was bothered for a long time about the amount of swirls in the clear under direct sunlight on my black car, so I thought I'd finally learn to buff and renew the paint.

I hope to get good enough so that I can make back what I spent on the equipment by detailing other peoples cars Neighbor already asked me to clean his corvette for him when he saw me washing my car the other day.

Oh and thanks Autogeek, I had to take advantage of that sale today

I hope you get great results. I got a PC last year and I found it wasn't easy as I thought it would be to do a decent paint correction. It takes patience and practice. After 12 hours, I felt like I should have had a few beers and just paid to watch a pro do it.

Thats great!

What kit did you buy exactly? I am almost positive that there are some other things you will need. Toss me a link and I will help ya some. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Look into the info we have posted around the site. Lots of helpful tips on detailing to be had.

The first detail is always a long and hard one. My first detail took 29hrs. Now, I can do a wash, clay, one-step polish, and wax in about 8 hours depending on the severity of the car. If its my car, cut that down to about 5 hours. Really dirty car that needs a good bit of detail added, 8ish.

Here's the link of what I bought

Porter Cable 7424

I realize it's going to take a long time. I have this entire weekend off. Hopefully the weather is nice. And before I start I'll probably buff one section and see the results before I do anything. I don't want to mess up the paint because it's still rather nice.

Good luck getting real decent results with that Wolfgang stuff.... Barely any cut and I don't see it making a huge dent on the hard Mustang clear coat. Just my .02.

Like Zinc said, this kit will not get you swirl free. It will help, but don't expect it to remove them completely. In all honesty, you should have talked to us first. I could of pointed you to a MUCH better starter kit.

The main thing you need more of is Microfiber. NO way is two going to even come close to covering it. I find it crazy that they only included 2. If you want something quick for now that will not break the bank, go with either of these two options: (you need at least 12 for starting)

Super Soft Deluxe Microfiber Towels, microfiber detailing towels, microfiber buffing towels, detail cloth, micro fiber - 2 of these 6 packs.
http://www.chemicalguys.com/SUPER_TO...mic_506_12.htm - 1 of these 12 packs

Its obvious which is the cheaper. I personally like the CG towels for buffing compounds and polishes, while I use the Super Soft AG ones for buffing Glazes, Waxes, and Sealants.

You don't really need these right now, but you will also need some towels for Quick Detailing. I reccomend these:

MONSTER MICROFIBER JUMBO ABSORBER

You could also just use one of these types for everything. Its your call. I find it good to have different towels for different purposes. Even though one towel may be good at all, I dedicate it to one thing.

12 towels is a good starting point. For future thought however, this is my current towel setup:
  • Wheels - 12x Black MFs
  • Wax/Sealant/Glaze - 12x Super Soft Blue MFs
  • Compound/Polish - 12x Gold CG MF
  • Quick Detailer - 6x Monster MFs
  • Drying - 1x Waffle Weave
  • Door Jams/Tires/Engine Bay - Whatever OTC towels I have

That is about 50 towels.

Other items to grab soon:
  • Microfiber Detergent (I use Tide Free/Clear)
  • Tire Shine (I use CarPro P.E.R.L.)
  • Glass Cleaner (I use Prima Clarity)
  • Interior Cleaner (Meguiar's Quik Interior Detailer)
  • Carpet Cleaner (Folex)

Conclusion: What you have will get you started, but you need more. You need MFs now... if you polish the car and buff it off with a lesser quality MF, all the swirls will come back and you will be wasting time.

My porter cable met its match tonight. A HEAVILY swirled 05 Dodge Durango. I made 3 passes with an Uber orange pad and Menzerna Power Gloss. The aftermath was miles better than original, but still not what I had hoped for. I'm gonna try out a yellow Uber pad on my next order, but I'm also thinking its time for me to step up to a Flex.

I have not seen the thread, going to check it now... but try M105/Surbuf. I have heard it gets amazing results.

Why did they put 6.5" pads in that kit?

I would have opted for the Meguiars Microfiber Setup...

Nice purchase though

Little update. I had the order cancelled, Autogeek was pretty nice about it. It wasn't what I wanted if it wouldn't get the job done so I just opted out. Any suggestions on what I should get now would be greatly appreciated. I can order sometime in the future.

For now I'm going to stock up on some towels. Is there any sort of wax or sealant that will cover up the swirls temporarily and not worsen them. I know swirls on a black car is inevitable but what's my best route?

You can't see it in the pictures but the side skirts are pretty worn. Not sure what happened but the owner must of had them repainted or they were eaten up from salt. Either in the future I'll opt for a repaint or just replace the skirts with 03 cobra side skirts when I get an 01 front bumper.

Detailers domain has some good kits, plus 15% off right now and $10 flat rate shipping. Their customer service is good, and they are a forum sponsor (help a brother out)

http://www.detailersdomain.com/Polis...its_c_209.html

People with more experience will have better advice on compounds, etc. I have almost the same car and I got the kit with the M105 and M205 and it took care of everything that my fingernail couldn't catch. Someone asked more or less the same question a few months ago and everyone had their recommendations, I'll try and find it.

^This because the D/A is more powerful and doesnt bog down when under pressure like the PCXP, or the Menzerna kit from DD but you get the PCXP.

This is the kit I suggest to everyone:

DI Packages PC 7424XP with M105, M205 and 5.5" pads - Free Shipping Available | Detailed Image

M105/M205 have a learning curve, but it can be done. This what a lot of the industry uses at this time. It gives you everything you need to get started correcting.

Other items to make it complete and get you started:
  • Sealant - Blackfire Wet Diamond OR Menzerna Powerlock
  • Wax - Autoglym HD
  • MFs - See above post
  • MF Detergent - See above post
  • Clay Bar - Mother's OTC kit
  • Car Wash - Meguiar's Gold Class OR Chemical Guys Glossworkz OR DoDo Juice Basics of Bling (there are tons of options here)
  • Wash Tools - Lampswool OR Sheepskin wash mitt, Waffle Weave Towel, Grit Guard, 2 3+ Gallon buckets

Search through DI's packages. They are acually a good collection. Most "packages" are not very good, but they have some nice priced ones with good products. Plus, they are doing 10% off and $2.99 flat rate shipping atm.

Still say you should go with the griots or one of the Flex 3401 kits Phil sells either the Menzerna or one of the Meguiars kits. The Porter Cable 7424XP is underpowered in my opinion, its a nice little machine but I always found under pressure it would stop rotating every time which would in turn result in lesser results that I hoped for. Which is why I sold it. If I ever get a D/A polisher again it will be the 3401 or the GG D/A or a newer better one when it is released.

I see a lot of sheepskin mits but I hear both good and bad things about them and their quality. And would you recommend a cobra waffle weave? That's what I was ordering before.

I'll probably take that into consideration. I want the best results possible so I'm not going to buy whatever. The GG must be the way to go. I'll pair it up with some M105 & M205, autoglym HD, pads and towels.

I'm about to wash my car today with what I have (Microfiber mit, 2 large walmart microfibers that aren't that bad, Meguiars Gold Class Wash, and the handy-dandy leaf blower)! I hate washing it knowing I don't have the best equipment, but it really needs it and I can't wait to get supplies
