Griots Paint Prep review

I got some of this from autoanything.com essentially for free when I ordered some braided brake lines to get my order over $150 and get 15% off. It looked like something useful and good to try, and easy to justify getting since it was "free"

According to Griots:
"It's important to use Paint Prep to remove all of the old waxes, polysilicones and oils so our care products can properly bond to the surface."
Griot's Garage Paint Prep, 35 Ounces - Griot's Garage

For application it says to spray and wipe, just like you would with IPA to strip wax. I decided to mist it on fairly liberally, then wash with gold class and a grout sponge and rinse, since the car had a bit of dust and dirt on it as well. I barely used the neck of the bottle, so I see this working on 6-10 cars depending on how much you use it. There isn't much of a smell either.

My take: Probably not worth the $13 plus shipping to most people since IPA is a quarter of the cost and can be gotten locally easily. However, if you have a car that has a recent application of crappy wax or products with fillers or want to make sure your paint is completely free of previous products, this works really well. When I rinsed the car I expected sheeting and drying to be a pain, but not nearly as bad as it ended up being. The roof on my car would NOT get dry. Even with 220mph leaf blower pointed a foot from it, the water was stuck on the surface and took forever to dry. I'm hoping taking my time with the prep work will help a few layers of powerlock last me through the winter, especially since the car won't be driven much. Here are some pictures from trying to sheet and then waiting 5 minutes to see what happened:

Roof after at least 5 minutes:

Hood after 5 minutes:

Can't wait to get some sealant/wax on there!

Nice review man looks like it did what it need to do and that was strip the surfaces of all oils and old LSP's. I would say it worth it for that price because some times IPA wipe down dont always remove everything especially if the previous protection was a strong sealant you some times have to do 2 or 3 IPA wipe down to remove it all. I see this product saving time because you dont have to wash with an APC to remove help strip your old LSP prior and if its just lightly dusty and you do a waterless wash or quick detail you can then go straight to stripping the old LSP without a wash. Looks like this product would be great if you want to get the most out of your sealant or carnauba to ensure great bonding. It also would be great for those who are about to apply a on of the many nano coatings on the market like thanks for sharing. I know Carpro has their new product called Eraser which is essentially the same thing but I am sure it costs more and you get less. Great pictures man shows that it really does strip old LSP's well if thats the sheeting after 5 minutes.

i got 2 bottles on clearance and I like the stuff...I wont use an IPA for the chance that it can mar the paint because it makes paint softer as you spray it.

Really? I have never heard that... intresting. Maybe I should look into something other than IPA then.

Even with how hard our clear coats are this is an issue?

Added to sticky

I dont know about your clear but mine is soft as butter. Even quality waffle weave drying towels micro mar it. So that's why I never use ipa since my paint is already stupid soft

Thats odd, Zinc has said many times that his 2010's clear coat is crazy hard.

I think its only the black. I have seen a few people complain as well about how soft the 2010+ paint is for them. I only use my cobra rolled edge mf towels to dry it as well. I was tempted to opti-coat my car just for that reason of being so soft and the coating would have made it more scratch resistant
