Skip the PC and buy the flex?

My mustang has some heavy swirling and defects. What can I expect from a Flex that I cant get from the PC? How much harder is a rotary to learn when I have 0 experience? I have an older explorer dd that I can practice on and do not mind getting a couple buffer burns in. I just want to buy once so that I can invest in other things.

what flex are you talking about..the 3401 or a rotary flex? The flex 3401 will NOT bog down..it fights you more as it will want to walk if not kept flat. it take more energy to use then a PC because of that..I had a Flex and a PC..I then sold my PC for a Griots and use only the MF pads and the 7/8" Hydrotech pads and I sold my flex because I had no use for it. The flex is a much more powerful machine and can get the job done with certain situations faster..but the Griots and the MF pads for me prove to be when I compared with my flex to produce faster results with a better finish.

It really sounds like the Meguiars microfiber pads and compounds and the Griots Garage orbital is the way to go. Just about everyone I know who's used the MF pads has loved them. I think that is the setup Kohrs has as directed by people on here. Maybe he'll check in and let you know what he thinks.

The PC will get the job done, it just might take a little longer. But at the same time, people have been using them for years, and will continue to use them. As far as learning on a rotary goes, that is going to be a lot harder than you think, and here's why: not all paints are the same, not all clear coats are the same thickness, and not all of them will respond to the same polish, pad or compound the same way. I guess the real answer is, how much money do you have to buy all the necessary products, and how much time do you have to practice and learn how to use them?

I have enough for either setup. The mustang is in storage until may so I am in no rush. I was thinking about grabbing a couple panels from a scrapyard to practice on. Based on what I have read I think I will go with the pc. Even if I get a rotary in the future it seems like I will still get plenty of use out of the PC. Thanks guys.

Thats the one, you may be able to shop around for a better price. Here is a pretty good deal from a very easy to deal with on here if you decide on a rotary. Maybe get both the PC and this?:

Plus it is a good bit more powerful then the PC..comparing it to my old PC it takes much more force to make it bog down..my old PC would bog down constantly and I wanted to throw it threw a wall sometimes cause of that..I dont have that issue with the griots.
nice thing about the Griots..its a lifetime warranty..no matter how it brakes they will replace it no question asked.

Do NOT start learning paint correction on a Rotary. That is just asking for trouble.

He sold his PC awhile back... just the Makita for sale now.

EDIT... checked the thread, Makita is sold now also. I hope OP did not buy it to start learning on Lol.

He didn't man Corey bought it:-) I suggest the op invest in the 3401 if he has the funds for it. Phil has some great kits for it check it out on detailer domain and you get a discount for being a member here just use the discount code its either one of theses: Mustang or Mustangs

either machine will do the job.

I can tell you that the PC has made a bit of a comeback with the Meg's DA Microfiber System.

Porter Cable Kit with Meg's DA Microfiber System.

Personally I'd get this kit. It's a little bit more money, but is a much more diverse kit than the MF system.

Is the flex really worth an extra $200 though? I just don't see it adding that much value...
