Detailer's Domain: Cadillac DTS - paint correction


What was done -
Exterior

- Wheels were prepped with Sonax Wheel Cleaner and cleaned up with various brushes
- Tires were spritzed down with Adam’s All Purpose Cleaner and washed down
- Wheel wells were cleaned up
- Pre Washed with W99
- Iron Cut
- Wash down and rinsed
- Door jambs were cleaned up
- Clayed
- Dried
- Tires dressed
- Masking
- Paint Measurement
- Meguiar's DA300
- Menzerna SF4000
- Inspection with Fenix, 3m Sun Gun, Infratech, and natural sunlight
- Last Step – Aquartz
- Wheel wells were cleaned and dressed
- Rubber and Plastics Treated
- Exterior windows and mirrors cleaned and sealed
- Exhaust tips cleaned
- Windows were clayed, cleaned, and sealed

Engine -
- Cleaned
- Dressed

Interior -
- Vac
- Wipe down and protect dash
- Leather cleaned and conditioned
- Glass cleaned

Phil,
That looks really good. My paint looks rough as well. Previous owner used some kind of electric waxing machine and it has swirls all in the paint. What combination of tools/method/chemicals do you recommend?

How did the clay take the swirls out? I've clayed my car and the swirls are still in.

The clay doesn't actually take the swirls out - it will remove any contamination that is stuck in the paint (rail dust, small grit, tar etc...) which gives you a nice smooth surface. From there you will have to compound and polish with some type of buffer to get the swirls out. I would suggest using a Porter Cable PC7424xp with some foam buffing pads, but do some research into how hard the paint of your car is and what people use for pads and polishes. There are some sticky's in this section that are great, and Phil also carries a lot of good beginner packages:
