First Time With Porter Cable - Messed Up My Paint! help
I thought i knew how to properly use my porter cable, but i guess not. I spent hours watching the videos on this forum and on youtube explaining how to use it. I have a black car.
Here is what i did: wash clay then i started trying to do paint correction I used painters tape to make a little square on my hood. Proceeded to do everything i was told. I only used speed 4-5 with barely any to no pressure at all. Made about 5-6 passes for the one square and then buffed off with a microfiber towel. Product used: Chemical Guys scratch-swirl b gone (Scratch and Swirl Remover) with an orange pad (HEX LOGIC Car Buffing Pads, Car Wash Equipment, Au) Results: Left side: after.... Right side: before ![]() ![]() As you can see.. i messed up badly. I continued to make other squares on my car and use different things like less abrasive pads, less abrasive polish (Final Polish by Chemical Guys) with no real help. No combination really worked. The less abrasive pad and final polish didn't mess up the paint like the picture above but it didn't take out the swirls. Can anyone please give me some helpful tips or lead me to some guide(s) or videos because this is just unacceptable on my part and i am extremely mad at myself. Thanks |

Never used CG Scratch and Swirl Remover but from reading your description your not doing any polishing your just letting the abrasives in the polish scuff the clear thats why you have haze. (Yet I have used many polishes and compounds and I am pretty sure this is your issue) You need to use moderate to heavy pressure and bump the speed to at least 5.5 to 6 and use your orange hexalogic pad. Also use only 3 drops on the pad making each equally spaced like a triangle in about a dime sized amount. Make several passes until the it starts to turn clear this is when the polish is fully broken down. Then follow up with the CG Final Polish using either a hexalogic green, white, blue or gray pad to remove the haze from Scratch and swirl remover set the PCXP on speed 5 to 6 and use moderate pressure at first this is to remove the haze then lighten up on the pressure for a few passes to bring out the gloss. Also remember to do your IPA wipedowns to remove the polish residue and I hope you have adequate lighting.

Throw some elbow into it, like Danny said. Do less passes with more pressure and see how it comes out, and make sure you aren't dry-buffing either meaning the polish is dried. One way to check that mid-pass is to bump the speed down a bunch and see if the pad leaves more wet polish on the surface - if it does, keep going.
