hey guys, mazda really needs a full detail with paint correction and all. Looking at picking up a buffer, but im not sure which one to get. Ive never done any buffing before, so im definitely a noob. I have the concept down, just never physically done it. Just kinda trying to get an idea what buffer i should get, along with the basic products to get a good detail on the car, but nothing hardcore.

Paint correction is the process of removing and/or repairing any surface scratches in the clear coat with an ultimate goal of a surface that is completely smooth and free of defects. Inspection with high-power lights (500w halogens for example) will show you what you've been missing.

If you want to get into machine polishing my recommendation (and some of what I use) is a Porter Cable 7424xp along with Meguiars M105 and M205 and foam pads. However, you will need to spend in the realm of $500 to get a complete machine polishing setup. I'd start with reading the stickies (see below) and some of the recent threads such as this one:

Got pc 7424xp for Christmas! Now What's Next? Which Waxes?

Yeah it isn't cheap, as you start working on it you'll keep finding things to do and buy more stuff. Just a quick list of things you really and truly need to do it right:

buffer
pads
polish
compound
shampoo/buckets/grit guards/wash mitt
All-purpose cleaner
Rubbing alcohol
Spray bottles
microfibers
more microfibers
lighting
claybar/lube
wax/sealant

and don't forget: lots and lots of time and attention to detail.

Nice pick up! But yes, the stickies have EVERYTHING you need man.

Also, I recommend reading on a number of detail write-ups to see what products were used when and where, and their processes. You can learn a lot from that too.
