Noobie..Bought a Black & Decker 6138.. What next??
Hi,
Recently I picked up a Black & Decker 6138(garage sale 5$), I've been told it's decent..I want to compound and polish my complete car. Have a '95 GT Black..excessive swirl marks, overspray..etc..vehicle doesn't look like it's ever been compounded let alone even waxed.. I'm a mechanic by trade, but am a complete noobie in the compounding and polish..I've clay bar'd/waxed/washed my other cars..so I'm taking on something new that I'm interested in.. Question..will the 6138 with a 6 1/2 inch hook & loop do the job or will I need to pick up something else,..for the foam pads, I don't have any so I will need to buy from somewhere.. I'm not aware on what colors I would need and for what levels..done some reading but noticed some colors from other companies are different..this true and what should I get??

The polisher you linked is a rotary. What that means is that you can burn through your paint with it if you aren't careful. If you understand the risks and are willing to give it a shot then hopefully someone else can help you - I use a dual-action orbital myself so I don't have to worry about burning through paint.
www.detailersdomain.com is a forum sponsor and they have pads at a reasonable price that work well. I would get some orange pads for compounding and either green or blue for final polishing. Many people like Meguiars M105 and M205 for a good two-step compound/polish, but there are many different brands. Check out the stickies for more recommendations, and if you have any more specific questions ask away! |

ok, think I'll pick up a dual action orbital with a kit of all the pads, rther play safe than sry..I'll just use the rotary as a sander.can"t complain for $5..
What would you suggest for a good beginner orbital? |

I would stick to using a Dual action polisher if I were you something like the Griot Garage Dual action polisher would be good, its better than the Porter Cable 7424XP and has a lifetime warranty. Rotary use should only be done with someone what has done several corrections and knows the paint correction process already, also has time to practice on a scrap panel, read on how to use a rotary properly and watch certain videos on how to do polish with one as well. I wouldnt use it on you ride.
