Nice Write up there Piggy.... that didn't take five minutes!!! I don't think I know that much about anything car related...so how much time do you set aside to do the whole process?? And you pretty much have to do it all at the same time??

So BK... you pre ordered a Camaro??? have or had a 07 Mustang and your Parents were getting a Cobra GT500... a week or so ago this is what you were posting... Now you are back with a C6 Corvette.... you know there are forums for the C6? this is a forum for Mustang "Enthusiasts" and are you??? Just asking.

Thanks...I usually set aside 6-8 hours. I'm very meticulous when I detail the car. It's black so if I don't get it perfect, it shows. Your car would be easier because it's a vert so you don't have to worry about the roof and also it's silver so it doesn't show as much swirling or imperfections. If you were to follow the write up it would probably take you 4-5 hours. The most time consuming part is the polishing/compounding with the porter cable. If the car isn't swirled too badly you can skip the compounding part and just do the polish. The polish will get rid of minor swirls and also bring back some shine to the paint. You don't have to do it all at the same time but I recommend it. I did that detail in the pictures in 2 days because I had to go to work during the day. I just made sure that I wiped the car down with a quick detail spray before touching it with the buffer. If you get any dirt on the car, the porter cable will catch it and just rub it into the paint, defeating the purpose of the detail

Some Good leather conditioner would help if its not too far gone

And nice write up Piggy, my 66 i used to have was black and i hated keeping it clean. It seemed like right after i got done cleaning it real good and drive down the street a few blocks it was dirty again

thanks, +1 to the leather conditioner. It would probably be the best bet, though I'm not 100% sure as I've never owned a soft top.

Do NOT use dish wash soap like Dawn. It will strip all of your wax off. If you want to strip the wax one every now and then use it, but I've been told it's bad for the paint.
Nice write up. Although dawn is perfectly safe to use; even on less than 8hr old clear coat it doesnt effect anything.

A-freakin-men to that. There's a carwash not a few football fields away from my house- and it seems by the time I pull it back into the drive after spending 10+ dollars in quarters to get the thing washed there is already spots of god-knows-what everywhere.
I don't remember who it is but I saw in someones signature a quote that went like "Having a black car is like having a retarded child- they require special attention".

Really nice write up man- I can't wait for the warmer months to roll around so I can actually get out in the driveway and detail my car. It's 4 degrees right now with a windchill in the negatives.

Dawn strips wax and oil out of the paint .. Do not use it. There are a few exceptions to it but very rarely should it be ever used.

+1

Yeah, you don't want to use dishsoap to clean your car. The only time i use dawn soap is a few drops in a bucket of water when i'm wetsanding, and that means its going to get buffed anyways.

Moral of the story: Use the soap made for your car, not your greasy pans.

Sure it strips the wax, but if you know it does that and plan on rewaxing the whole car afterwards it does no harm.

Great write up, very helpful especially the section with the porter cable. Did you just use a microfiber cloth to wipe off the broken down polish?

Nice write up, I'll have to do more than just use a good soap on my truck. The trucks 11 years old and probably needs a full conditioning.

Not just re-waxing. If you use Dawn than you better plan on doing a complete detail including a glaze to replenish those oils that you just stripped.
