Piggy, great tutorial!

My 1st Mustang was bought last fall, a black 2010 GT convertible. It looks sweet, and even though the dealership "detailed" it, I plan on making mine look just as glossy as yours when I pull it out of storage in a few weeks.

Anyway, one area of concern I have is in your instructions regarding getting the swirls out using the Poorboy 2.5 and 1, you mention "polishing" and only doing it once a year or every 6 months because it takes off the clear coat. Since my car is not very old, do you think just getting the PB1 (or equiv) will suffice?

I dont want to remove the clear coat from my paint, but I want to remove the minor swirls that are present.

If I remove the swirls and then get a nice wax on it, should I not have to ever use the swirl remover again?

Also, I have the dealer installed aftermarket Ford hood scoop and rear spolier. I do not have to worry about those, nor the lower bumper (because its plastic), correct? or do you still detail those items the same as the rest of the car?

Thanks in advance to whoever answers these questions for me!

I havent seen Piggy in here for a while. I know this question is for him. I am just adding my own advice.

Every you polish your removing mils / microns of clearcoat off your paint. This is what make it possible to remove swirls because your leveling the painted surface. The thing with polishing aka "paint correction" is you need to have all the proper equipment and products to do the job correctly. Not only that post polishing, you have to change your washing / drying technique to ensure you don't undo what you just fixed after one car wash. It does cost a couple of hundred bucks and several hours of your time to get a show car shine like Piggy's has but it is worth it. I can help you to decide what you need to get the job done, if your still interested in doing this properly. If you just want to get your ride to shine better and remove light swirls and scratches I can recommend some over the counter products as well. Also polishing is done to all painted surfaces on the vehicles exterior (metal and plastic).

thanks Dannyboy!

Please, feel free to give advice. I am prepared to buy that Porter Cable buffer and the material to do the job. I guess my only fear is removing the clearcoat. But if i can put something on at the end of my detailing to basically "replace" the clearcoat with something to help protect the paint, great. But like I said, maybe once I remove the swirls and get the paint to look lke glass, maybe I wont have to do it again.

Also, I have a cover to put on my car after I put it back in the garage and its cooled off.

I also have a California Duster to remove the light dusting it attracts. A friend also suggested a bottle of the stuff that can be sprayed on from a bottle and simply wiped off to help keep it shiny.

Again, please feel free to offer ANY advice! I am here to learn! I know others are as well.

Even if you practice good washing techniques within 6 to 9 month you will have light swirls and mars on the finish and will have to correct it again. It wont require a correction like the first time around that had a courser cut, but it will require correction with at least a light to medium polish.

You can however get Cquartz. This is what I have and am about to apply on my mustang gt. Its a new nano coating that you apply after polishing to protect the corrected finish for a period of 2+ years it also has scratch resistant properties that will help reduce swirls. Not only that it keeps the vehicle looking great and makes washing easy since dirt and bugs cant stick to the vehicle as much as they would without it. I cannot be removed with strong wash soaps, detergents, or alcohol, the only way to remove it is to polish it off. If you apply this you will not have to correct the finish as often as you normally would.

The california duster is ok to use but you have to make sure you use it properly if not you will scratch the finish. When using it just let the end tips of the duster glide over the paint. Never let the duster sit on the paint and then glide it over it that will scratch the hell out of it. You have to have it levitated over the paint at all times and only let the tips collect the dust from the vehicle. After dusting you can use a quick detailer to maintain the shine. I like Chemical Guys Pro Detailer it really leaves a nice glossy deep look to the vehicle after using it.
