8.8" Mustang Rear

I have a 1999 v6 with the 7.5" rear in it. I was planning on waiting about a year or so to put gears and an 8.8" in it, but i have the money now and i might as well go ahead and get the rear and get gears for it later.

I was searching ebay and I came across this 8.8" rear from a 79-93 fox body with t-lok and 3.08 gears. Will this rear bolt up to my driveshaft and rear suspension? If necessary, what modifications are required to make this part work? Is $250 too much money to pay for a complete yet used 8.8" rear end?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/79-93...31414384QQrdZ1

also, this rear is probably a 4 lug and drum brakes right? i want a 5 lug with disk brake rear. so what year mustang rears do i need to look at?

The easiest swap for you would be an 8.8 from a 99-04 Mustang GT.

The 99-04 Mustangs use Larger diameter bolts for the controls arms.
The 99-04 Mustang differential is narrower than the 86-98 differential.

there are actually 3 different sizes of housings. The fox body is the shortest, followed by the SN-95, and then the 99-04 new edge bodies. The ones for the 99+ should be easy to find

the other years can be used if need be, but with the differential changes the wheels will be a little sunk-in looking, but I have seen people correct this with spacers or wheel offsets.

Actually the fox and SN95 8.8 are the same flang to flang (54 inches).
The differance between the fox and the SN95 are the backing plates for the brakes and the axles lengths.

I just swapped a 1986 8.8 from a Mustang Gt into my 1995 V6 Mustang.
All I had to do was use the axles, backing plates, and brakes from the 7.5 rearend.

thanks for the info. so if i find an 8.8" from a 99-04 gt for cheap, i can use its brakes, axles, everything and it will bolt right up to my driveshaft and line up perfectly? i thought the brakes were the same from the gt and v6 minus the cobra?

Yes, the brakes and axles are the same for the GT and V6.

the 7.5 is stronger enough as gt's came with them and there wasn't a ton of failures.....now if your going to boost it then yes

the early 5.0's came with the 7.5" and they did break easily. i am throwing in 4.10s and a supercharger down the road so the 8.8" is what i am investing in

I beat up a 7.5 rear end for many years in my 85 Mustang without problems. That was with a 271 horsepower 289. I wouldn't use a 7.5 behind anything with more than 300 horsepower with slicks or 350 horsepower with a street tire.

Yes, even if you launch off idle. If you launch a car off idle on radials it will still blow the tires off. If you launch a car on off idle on slicks it will hook.

a properly prepped 7.5 is good until about 400hp if slicks aren't used. A rear support cover is available for these and are really a good upgrade for a 7.5
