The Mustang Chic (Smog Pump)

Okay....after calling ford dealership and being told I was under warranty ( 36,000 mile deal) I took my car this morning, talked with the people...of course that " clicking" noise wasnt happening....only because I needed it too.... they said it kinda sounded like wheel barings ( ?) --- said they hadnt changed a smog pump since the 80's..dont know if he was trying to make me feel stupid or what.... but long story short... when I was about to leave the car there for them to look at , they came back and told me that the car wasnt under warranty because it was past 36 months --WTF ??? and then started talking numbers.....negative..... 79 dollars just too look at it, then labor and then whatever needed to be done,,,,,,, I was like FUNK that....so , i took it to raffield to get an oil change---maybe they can see something when they pull it up on that thing and see something...u guys asked for a follow up--so ....

what is the problem? The difference between a wheel bearing and the smog pump should b eeasily identified, if it does it while the car is not moving that rules out wheel bearings.

87vert here is the catch up link.

like 87 said since it does it at idle or when stationary it is not your wheel bearings... sounds like they heard you say clicking from passenger-side fender and assumed wheel bearings?

I can understand you not being able to duplicate the issue if the problem is the smog pump, because the smog pump motor is not always activated. it only is used at various idle times and for the first 0-160 seconds of vehicle startup. When my pump was failing it would do it sometimes and other's it would work without making any noise?

Next time you start your car have someone or you put your hand up in the passenger side fenderwell and grab the rubber cup on the bottom of the smog pump, if this is the noisemaker you will feel it vibrating.

the standard warranty is 3yr/36,000 miles from date of original purchase, and it is whichever comes first........ my smog pump blew at about 39K so I was in the same boat you were. Im not sure because it has been sometime since I checked but I think the parts department told me the replacement pump was over $200 just for the part. So i deleted mine, and fixed it with the SCT chip, but it is against federal regulations to do so.

there are no moving or hot parts inside the federwell, you can pull back the plastic wheel tubing and see inside, don't be scared
