Royal Purple?

So. I've had my car for almost 5,000 miles now.
Time for an oil change.
It was last changed at the JiffyLube by the previous owner.
I want to do it myself.
My boyfriend keeps telling me to get Royal Purple & a K&N oil filter.
I did.

So, my question.
Is there anything that you have to do when changing from non synthetic oil to synthetic oil?
What's your opinion on Royal Purple?

if your using royal purple oil be sure to change it right on the 3k mark. the additives in RP oil break down rather quickly, and can severly hurt your motor if left in for an extended change interval. personally i would stay very far away from thier oil, but for some reason it seems to be gaining popularity. honestly in your v-6 i would not hesitate 1 second to put good ol motorcraft semi-synthetic in it with a motorcraft filter. both are good stuff, and can be bought inexpensively at walmart.

I use castrol synthetic blend in my 4.0L with a wix filter. Bosch also makes really good filters.

Just be careful of your downpipe when your changing your filter. I got a nice little burn on my arm from mine.

Royal Purple makes a great product. That's all I use in my car, with a Wix filter.

It is expensive though, so for the non-performance cars (girlfriends dd, work truck) I use Mobil 1.

I honestly don't think you should spend the extra cash on the RP or K&N.

To answer your question, no, there really is nothing to do when simply switching from conventional to synthetic oil. I'd just recommend sticking with one or the other, and not switch between them all the time.

used royal purple in my diesel cost me a hella of a lot but worked awesome and if you change oil, trans, and rear end you can actually gain power, dont call bs on this cause it was dyno proven numerous times in the truck mags i used to look at all the time wasnt a bunch but picked up 4-5 hp

I'm not a fan of Royal Purple, I ran it in my 2000 gt with 100k and it just seemed too thin for 5w30. I had trouble checking the oil level because it would barely stick to the dipstick.. also seemed to make my engine louder (ticking).. I switched to Mobil1 Synthetic 5w30 and haven't had a complaint. Also a friend of mine's dad used to run drag cars and he ran nothing but RP and after continually blowing motors he switched and the problems stopped.. I'm not saying that caused it, but he seems to think it did.

Mobile 1 FTW. It doesn't use purple dyes for gimmicks.

I wont use RP either...good old Mobil 1 with a Fram Tough Guard filter, every 3000 miles. It's not so much the breakdown that makes me change it at that interval, but the climate is extreme all year round and unbelievably dusty. You'll be fine with what you already bought, just change it at 3,000...and don't EVER go to Jiffy Lube again! The employees actually have a code they use...if you're not watching, they'll just wipe the filter off instead of pulling it off and replacing it...and this is straight from a buddy of mine who quit working there when he saw that shit happening. You'll really enjoy doing your own maintenance...and the peace of mind you get from it.

Some guy at an oil change place here told me i could go 10,000 miles on my mobile1.. he said "just come in after 5k miles and we'll just change the filter and you can run it another 5k" now personally i had never heard that before.. and on a motor with 106k miles it starts smoking when my oil hits 4k (no cats though) so that's not a risk i'm willing to take..

I've used 5W30 Motorcraft oil/filter in my truck since day one. Haven't had any problems with it lasting the 3,000 miles. If its just your daily driver, stick with the motorcraft or similarly priced respectable brands, no need for the $4 a quart in a DD imo.

I use Castrol Synthetic on my car and change it every 3k miles. Synthetic is the only way to go.

How many miles are on your car ^? I ask because I recently read again that the detergents in RP are such that it can make a car leak if its got higher miles. It basically whipes away the thick build up and may leave the car prone to leaking.

OK this has nothing to do with RP, but I didn't want to make a new thread. The PO of my car used Mobile 1 from the start (Thank God) I was wondering what a good oil filter was for the Mustang that uses Mobile 1? I don't want something REAL expensive. It's just a daily driver... not a track car.
