Erratic RPM in Idle
2006 V6. In neutral when nearing a stop (and even after stopping) RPMs surge to up to 2500. This is with foot on the brake only. Pushing in the clutch stops the surge. Release of the clutch sometimes allows it to surge again. It's like I'm giving it gas when I'm sitting still without my foot on the gas pedal. I've had the whole throttle body replaced (which I guess would rule out IAC or TBS), something having to do with a possible vac leak, and I believe a switch on the gas pedal was replaced too. Was told my a Ford Engineer that this is normal. How can 2500 RPMs while sitting at a stop light or chugging along in 1st and 2nd gear in traffic (requiring constant clutch engagement to lower RPMs) be normal??? One last ditch effort is a switch on the clutch, part should be coming in today. If this deesn't work, they are officially going with the "its normal." How convenient. Anyone have any suggestions?

I talked to this with my dealership technician. When moving and the car is in neutral (on a muanual), the rpms may come up as the idle sensor is still not engaged. He said something about the engine coming up in rpms like that so the engine can still breathe. Maybe someone can elaborate on this because I asked about this several months ago, and don't remember to a t what he said. So based upon that, your engine going up to 1500 rpms is normal.

i have a 01 gt 4.6 and i am having just the opposite problem sometimes when stopping it surges and the idle will go down to 500 then pulsate from there to 1300 or so it even stalls occasionally but it drives fine has good power as well sometimes it is perfectly fine...my throttle body is clean too?could my 02 sensor be the problem??? ckeck light is on and i scanned it it said bank 1 and 2 lean??? but it was doing it before the light came on.i was thinking the idle problem could be the tps being dirty.if anyone knows why it could be doing it let me know
thanks |
