2v, 3v, and 4v refer to the number of valves per cylinder for the OHC motors found in '96-present cars. 2 and 3v are both SOHC, 4v are DOHC. 4Vs are found in Cobras and Mach 1s, SOHCs in GTs and Bullitts. 3V replaced the 2v for the S197 body style ('05 to present), and makes considerably more power. All 2V motors are iron block, all 3 and 4v motors are aluminum, with the exception of the factory supercharged motors found in the '03/04 Cobra and GT500s.

In terms of the block, the best block to work with is the Teskid block, which is the aluminum block found in the up to '01 4v motors. Some may argue the Terminator shortblock (Terminators are '03/'04 Cobras) is better, as it has full forged internals, where the Teskids only come with forged cranks, however the Teskid block is proven strong to over 1000hp, and is somewhere around 80 lbs lighter than the iron block in the Termie.
