Possibly over-heating?

So recently my 96 V6 has been acting in a way I find weird. The temp gauge never goes past around the RM in Normal, and yet, I feel as if it is running hot for some reason. THe reason for this is, whenever I run it for any moderate to long amount of time (An hour or more, say) and I turn it off and walk in, I can distinctly smell the odor of how the coolant smells in the coolant reservoir. I have no clue why this is, I've read of very similar problems where it was a leaky hose (checked mine and they seem to be air tight), and I've also heard it could be the water pump, heater core, or even the radiator. If it helps any of you pros give me any advice, the coolant does appear to be an almost rusty-esque color in the tank. I had it flushed about 1-2 months ago with new hoses on about 3 months ago. I appreciate any help, advice, suggestions, or anything.

P.S. I know it would appear that I use the site very seldomly, I'm more of a browser typically, and my internet has been off and on, I do really appreciate the entire community here and here soon would like to get more active.

Thanks fellas
