drag suspension

when I go to the tracks I see alot of drag cars where the shock never give any. EX: (when they take off the car does not set down in the back, the back tires never get any closer to the fender, and when the front tires come off the ground the tires never get any farther away from the car.) What causes this?

I know I have to have HP to make the tires come off the ground but what part of the suspension would help me get them up?

front: struts or coil overs, drag springs, and an aftermarket tubular K-member

rear: drag springs, adjustable shocks, adjustable upper and lower control arms pretty much make up the rear end for suspension.

taking weight off the car helps a great deal also.. they say its a tenth of second gain for every 100lbs you take off the car.

What kind of cars are you watching? The reason I ask is b/c if your tlking about a full blown race only beast, its possible youre witnessing a four link set up which is doing a lot more than you can see. Its really got a lot to do with adjustment. If you get certain aspects and angles right you can make your car hook like crazy. On the same note, if the adjustments are wrong, you had might as well put it back on the trailer.

What you are seeing is a suspension that is working. Squating in the rear does nothing except unload the tires. You don't want the car to squat very much in the rear. The lack of travel in the front suspension that you are seeing is most likely due to travel limiters limiting front suspension travel to keep the car from going on the rear bumper.

Ideally, you want only enough weight transfer to maintain traction, the stiffer the front and rear setup (assuming you have traction) the faster the car will go. Unnecessary movement wastes speed.

For example, when I run my front struts loose my 60's are a tenth slower. In good track conditions I'll crank them up to #10 (road race setting) and the car will transfer very little to the rear and is .2 faster through the 1/4.
