Torque

Here's a stupid question..
I know I can go look it up somewhere, but I also know that I can get a better answer here.

What exactly is torque? What are the differences between torque and horsepower?

1 Horsepower is the amount of power needed to lift 550 pounds 1 foot in 1 second (based on a force over a time).

Torque is a rotational force. When the combustion takes place and the crankshaft rotates (twists) torque is created. Torque moves from the engine to the transmission to the driveshaft to the rear end and axle assembly.

Also, torque is not defined by time. So as horsepower is a measurement of power of time, torque is a constant measurement of rotational energy.

Torque is the initial force you feel at acceleration, horsepower is just a calculated number to measure the amount of power the engine is making.

Horsepower = Torque X Engine RPM / 5252

Horsepower in a straight line is torque.

Hmm... So when a dyno gives you the numbers, is it using the formula or a mechanical method?

Thanks for the explanation, it really helped.. Just had more questions.

A dyno can register the numbers diffently (different kinds of dyno's), but most measure realwheel horspower by hooking up to some of the car's sensors then letting the car roll on a roller with the drive wheels. The formula is a universal number as the HP and TQ curves always intersect at 5252 RPM's.

In simple terms, torque is force and horsepower is how fast you can use that force. A chassis dyno measures torque and calculates horsepower based on how fast that torque gets the wheels moving.

They both go hand in hand to make speed... some people simplify this as "Torque gets you moving and horsepower keeps you moving".
