a few questions ive been meaning to ask

i made a little list of questions that i have had lately, so i decided to post and maybe get some answers!

1) engine compression - what exactly does it do? how do you change it?

2) stroking - what exactly are you doing to the engine when you stroke it? is there just a maximum that you can stroke it, or is it like boring it (where there is a limit on what is safe for the engine and what isn't)

3) heads - what exactly is the difference in 2v and 4v heads? is it possible to change an engine from 2v to 4v and vice versa?

4) fuel injection - what has to be done to convert a carburated engine to fuel injected or fuel injected or carburated?

5) cams - what exactly are they? how will i know which ones produce more power than others? do cams even produce power at all?

6) last question - what would i have to do to a 351 windsor to make 550+ RWHP n/a? is it even possible without super/turbocharging/nitrous?

thats all that i can think of right now, but if i do think of more, i will probaby post all my related questions in this thread... thanks!

1- compression ratio refers to the ratio of the volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at the bottom of the stroke to th volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at the top of the stroke. engines running high compression can make more power but there's also a greater chance of detonation, which is why f/i motors run lower compression.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compression_ratio
2- when you stroke a motor, you increase the length of the piston travel by using a different crankshaft, thus effectivelt increasing displacement.
3- as for the heads, i'm not sure if you can put 4v heads on a 2v motor. i'm not sure if i understand the question about the differences between the two. one has 2 valves (1 intake, 1 exhaust) per cylinder, the other has 4 (2 intake, 2 exhaust). 4v heads also have 2 cams per head (DOHC). 2v heads have 1 cam per head (SOHC).
4- cams. the cams are what control the opening and closing of these valves inside the head. the ones that produce more power have a more aggressive profile, meaning that the lobes that open the valves are bigger so the valves remain open for a longer period of time for each complete combustion cycle.
that's about all i can tell you. i'm sure more info will follow
