Ball Joints

I noticed when changing my front springs that the rubber surrounding by Ball Joints was busted. You could move your finger across it and get grease. Should I look into replace them?

I plan to get the Steeda X2 Balljoints, but can't afford them right now, so I would just buy standard ones.

How hard are they to replace?

Yes, replace them. If the rubber is busted, it's only a matter of time before they dry up and get a bunch of crap in them.

They shouldn't be difficult to replace. Just borrow a ball joint press from your local auto parts store. Also buy a ball joint seperator (also called a pickle fork) if you don't have one.

$40? for one maybe. I never do one, for the amount of work it's worth it to do all of them. Or if your wanting the Steeda ones then don't bother for now, there is still grease in/on them they are fine for a while still, not good but not gonna leave ya anywhere anytime soon. Is there play in them yet? Also you don't need a pickle fork or really want to use one cause they can do a lot of collateral damage. Just hit the area where the taper of the ball-joint stem sits in the spindle or arm sharply with a dead-blow ball-peen or mini sledge, from the side. Hit it as flat as you can, hammer face to surface, and it'll just drop out after a couple good whacks.

$21 each at Autozone.

When you mention play, what kinda of play would I be looking for?

Wow, that is super cheap! If you grab the top of the tire with one hand and the bottom with the other, with the tire off the ground, and try to rock it (pull with one arm push with the other, alternating quickly). You'll have to apply a good deal of force but if you can feel any play at all then have someone help you to watch where it is coming from, worn out wheel bearing will do this to. A good trick to feel if its the joint is to have one person rock it and another push their finger fairly hard into the space between the two parts, where the rubber boot is, and if they can feel the two pieces move separately then there is play. If they are really worn out you'll feel and see the play without anyone's help. If it's the bearing then it will also have play from side to side (grabbing the tire on the sides and rocking back and forth). If there is only side to side play but non up and down then you have worn steering joints (tie rods).

The car is at the shop atm getting a tire put on, balancing, and alignment. Gonna get them to check the balljoints while they are in there.

Good call, any good alignment shop should do it without your asking, if you think they are full of it then try out the way I told ya.

What wouldn't do any good? Regardless if I need ball joints or not, I need an alignment since I changed the front springs. My tires are bending inward at the top atm.

I meant wouldn't do any good to complain about him not being at work. You know, you could complain but it won't do any good any how. Not about you getting a necessary job done, the alignment.
