Painted my hood today...with Rustoleum!!!

Sanded, Primered then Painted Satin Black with Krylon...I know, I know. but I'm a po' boy and this hood isn't staying forever soooooo I thought I'd see how it turned out. I think it looks SICK with the red inserts (which will be painted blue pretty soon). Not to bad so far, but we'll see tommorrow after a second coat and wetsanding.

From that angle on my screen it looks pretty fucking good for a rattle can, nice work.

needs a lot of wetsanding from the looks of it...as of now you can see where the dry lines are which will be there until you take care of them. i'd wetsand and then matte clear once your satisfied with the eveness of the paint...so far its a good first step...if a black hood is your thing

***Update***

Well I didn't like the way that the Krylon was looking so I switched products and picked up some Rustoleum. Threw down a thin coat that looked better and let it dry to touch then threw down a nice thick one that made it look purtty sexy.

Well, hell I'm pleased with it. Wetsand and Clear tomorrow. Goshdamn work always getting in the way.

Looks good? LOOKS GREAT!

Hahahaha, great job. I don't think anyone could tell you did it with a spray can if you didn't mention it...purely based on the photos!

how did you fuck it up with wetsanding? what grit did you use? and what did you buff/polish the hood with after you wetsanded?

I did everything by hand...rubber block and 2000 grit wet/dry paper. This is my first time painting fiberglass and I'm used to painting wood so I think I put to much force on it. And I didn't even bother buffing it after because i sanded all the way to the primer in some spots. That's why there are streaks if you look closely. This is practice anyways I'm just learning on a part that's not gonna stick around for very long.

yea, you never want to use much force when wetsanding... but still i find it odd that you could sand down to primer with 2000 grit... its not that abrasive of a sandpaper. how many coats of paint did you put on the hood?
and as for not buffing the hood... itll look waaaaaaayyyyy better if you do.

I only put two coats over the primer...a thin one that I let dry-to-touch then a heavy one. I'll take your advice on buffing it next time...gonna go get paint and more sandpaper today...maybe a sander.

you shouldnt have to wetsand base coat...get it to where u like how it looks, streaks and all, then hit it with clear! and if ur using rattle can, you want ALOT of coats of clear before u wetsand and buff, can clear is pretty thin, ive done all kinds of painting from rattle can, to full custom bike tanks. just a tip for ya

Looks pretty damn good. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with the balls to put a rattle can to work (rattle canned my Termi bumper, interior pieces, decklid blackout, tail lights, spoiler, and other little things). 2 tips from my experience:

1. Be gentle with the wetsanding. It's easy to want to push hard to get it done quick but you'll burn through coats fast and the wetsanding will leave some scuffs that need to be buffed out so going hard with the wetsanding will make the scuffs deeper and harder to get out. Plus you're trying to smooth out the finish, not make a surface for more paint to get a grip on.

2. Don't wetsand the color coats. Just from my person experience, wetsanding color coats horribly dulls the finish, even after applying clear coat. I wetsand my primer and my clear coat, although I have painted some things where I prepped really well and the pieces looked damn near perfect without any wetsanding of the clear coat.

If you happen to have any spare parts laying around you can use them to practice. Rattle can skills really come in handy when you don't have $300 to drop to get a hood painted

Thanks man She'll hopefully be getting a bigger engine. And I get to work on my fiberglass skills since I busted up my new Termi bumper getting her on a car dolly after she broke down

2 more tips:

1. If you haven't already, buy one of these

They're like $2 and are much easier on your hand.

2. Make sure you overlap your lines of paint. That should help reduce streaks in the finish by ensuring that every spot is well covered.
