Shops and core charges, question.
I recently did a brake job for a friend. Pads, rotor, and front calipers. The passenger front caliper piston was mangled (never seen anything like it) so I took the front calipers to AutoZone. I paid $74 for both after core.
My friend asked me how much would a shop usually charge and I honestly didn't know because I didn't know if shops did the core charge "thing." The calipers would have been $70 each, but I got them for $37 each because I took the old ones back. Do repair shops do the core charge and pass the savings on, do they do the core and pocket the money, or something else?

It is normally the right thing to do is pass on the core charge savings to the customer. If the core is non-refundable (due to the part being non-rebuildable) then you pass the core charge on to the customer. I think you were lucky about the caliper piston being mangled that you got a refund on the core charge, My understanding is, when they rebulid the caliper, they refurnish the piston and re-ring it.
