01 GT cut springs
If anyone here has cut the springs on their 99-04 Gt what are the pros and cons. Bad ride, no difference, or improved ride. Just like to get everyones input....

personally, I wouldn't cut them. You can buy a set of lowering springs for under $150 bucks if ya shop around or ck e-bay.

That's very bad. Cut them with a cutoff wheel or hacksaw, or nothing at all.

I cut about a third of a coil in the front, and half a coil in the back. Cut 3/4-1" off the front (GT) to drop it an inch is my guess, I need to cut a little more off my front springs to get there. Honestly the little drop I got from cutting my springs hasn't affected the ride quality much if not improved it. I mainly did it for the cosmetics of having the wheel fill out the wheel well better than stock. Performance wise, not much change.
If you cut a lot you'll wear out your struts a lot quicker, but an inch isn't going to do much, about the same effect as being fat or having a few passengers in the car all the time. If you do cut them, make sure you wait a week or so of driving so they settle down to the height they'll be at before doing anymore cutting. |

I cut 1 full coil off front front and 3/4 from rear.
Ride changeg negligibly, not harsh at all. I do plan on getting after market but wanted to cut about how much the Eibach pro kit would lower me so I could see if I would like it more or less than HR sport. No real negatives after probably four month however, the lower isolators are shit worn. I reinstalled them and the make noise when reversing in a turn and it sucks. I did get an alignment and was get VERY close to specs but I still need castor/chamber plates. Since I'm posting from my phone I can't poker pics but do a search for my name. I recently uploaded quite a few images. Sent from my Nexus One using AutoGuide App |

Really, the "cut coils = bad ride myth" is just that!
You do have to use some discretion, but it is possible to cut the coils and still maintain a safe and decent handling ride. It's kinda like an industry "worst kept secret" and I've met more than one builder who've used the method to refine the ride height of a vehicle. The fact does remain, however, that if you want to go lower than a couple of inches...you should just bite the bullet and buy new coils. Sometimes, the truth hurts...and takes cash. lol |
