having a problem depressing rear brake piston
i decided to change my brakes today and am having a problem pushing the piston on the rear calipers back in to make room for the new pads. on the front i just used a C-clamp but in the back nothing seems to work. ive tried using the clamp while opening the bleeder valve but that wouldn't work either. my car is a 99 V6. Does anybody have an idea what the problem could be.

the pistons have to be screwed in due to the caliper also fubctioning as a parking brake. they make a tool for this that you should be able to pick up at most auto parts stores or in a pinch, needle nose pliers or vice grips will work. you will see 2 notches in the piston, the tool goes into those and then the piston is screwed clockwise into the caliper and when you get it back far enough for the pads to fit over the rotor, one of the notches needs to be facing the bottom of the caliper. There is a little nipple on the pad that fits in there

just be really careful with pliers as it is easy to gouge the caliper piston

ok so i just tried to screw the piston back in and it only worked on the passenger side so im thinking its the parking brake holding the driver side piston out. my parking brake is fully disengaged though so i have no idea how to fix it.

try putting some pressure inward on the piston while screwing it in. Sometimes they can be a real bear.
