Noises...

Recently I started hearing a squealing noise from under the hood. It's only loud enough to be heard when the car is idling.
I'm thinking it's the belt, how about you guys?

Second noise: It's a squeaking noise, only happens when I go over bumps or uneven ground.

Any ideas on either?

1st noise: check the belt tension and condition it may be missing a few teeth, sometimes the idler pulley can squeal

2nd noise: could be front sway bar bushings? try bouncing the front of your car while parked to help identify where the noise is coming from.

Belt looks like it's starting o crack on the ribbed side, I'll replace that next chance I get.

I did the bouncing the car thing, but didn't hear any noises when I did it from the front.
The back made kind of a hissing noise when going back up, like if I had gone over a speedbump too fast. Is that normal?

might be time for new shocks/struts, i would stand up on the front support with the hood open and give it some real world bouncing. might also want to take a peak at the swaybar endlinks?

Alright, I'll do that a little bit later.
What would I be looking for? I don't know anything about suspensions(yet).

i would look for look for cracking or dry-rotted bushings, here is a little link for mustang suspension basics that may be useful.

Check the belt of course for missing teeth or not enough tension. You can run a bar of soap over the belt and see if that helps any. If it's the belt, the soap could delay the annoyance for a few days. Also, check the idler, and alternator pulleys. They are notorious for going out and make a hell of a squealing noise.

Check all front suspension bushings. I wouldn't say that it's anything too serious since mine has been doing the same damn thing for over 2 years. I am just way too lazy to fix it.

well you can also run it with the belt off to see if you have a bad bearing

How would I check the pulleys?
I did the whole soap thing, it seemed to work, but it was back when I pulled into my garage at the end of the day.
It only happens sometimes, and it's not that noticable with the hood up, probably because of the echoing.

As for the suspension, is there a reason everyone is telling me to check the front? Are there more poblems there?
I went over a few speedbumps on purpose today, and it seems to be coming from the rear left.

I had a big headache today, so I wasn't too motivated to jump around on top of the car, or to crawl under and check the bushings. Hell, I was going to work on the fuel problem on my parents' truck, but after I jacked it up and loosened a bolt, I decided I'd do it tomorrow.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

if you hear it coming from the rear you can check the upper and lower control arm bushings, the shock and quad shock bushings, but do another bounce test from the rear.

Yeah, check the rear if it is coming from the rear. I would also check the front just incase.

I would change the belt if the soap trick worked. It works for an hour sometimes and over a week other times. If it took the squealing away for a little while, then there should not be any reason for it to be the pulleys.

The noise is the reason I drive around with my radio on pretty loud.
