thoughts on Short Shifters...

Ok I recently messed up on Ebay, trying to save a buck. I found an auction for a Steeda Tri Ax new for a t-5 t-45 going for buy it now 100.00. I jumped on it. I thought that I had a T-45. well after recieving the shifter I discovered that I do not have the T-45, I have the 3650 or whatever.... How did I learn this? I tried to install the shifter and found that the shaft that goes down into the tranny was about 3/8ths inch to long.

Off tangent thoughts... How does a short shifter work? Im assuming by raising the pivot point for the shifter handle, thus 2 inches of movement at the top would cause the lower end to swing farther, so in order for the lower end to move the required inch or so to sift the gears, you do not need to move the top as far.

Still with me? Hope so...

I am almost done making an adapter plate for my t-45 shifter so that it can fit on my 3650. Basically it is juat a steel plate 3/8ths inch thick that will go between the shifter housing and the tranny, sealed with Silicone to both and then torqued down.... Just like a throttlle body spacer.

I am thinking that this should work, but I am actually worried that I will have a TO Short shiftr. meanng that the pivot point for the handle will be to high up, requiring almost no handle movement.

any thoughts?

I really cant go after the auction seller, as the auction plainly statees that the shifter is for a t5 t45, and it also states no returns. I am the one who messed up, not the seller. if this dosent work Ill simply leave my stock one on sell this one and buy the right one.

What year/type of Stang do you have? I would post this again in the right section for your year of car and you may get more responses/ideas.

I'm not sure about how to properly explain the mechanics of how the shifter improves shift ability compared to a stock unit, but the general idea is to take slop out of the shift, by adjusting the height & length of the shifter, as well as changing angles and lengths. Short throws can reduce shift travel by something like 60%, giving you that tight 'snick-snick' thing when you shift.
Some also have adjustable stops on them (like the MGW unit) that help prevent damage inside the transmission resulting from slamming the stick around.

actually I took it out after about a week. I was worried about damaging my tranny, (not sure how, but darn near everyone warned me it would) and the shifting was actually TO short. as in I only had to move the shifter to the left about 1/2 inch to hit 1-2. total fore and aft throw was about 1.5 inches. Made it kinda hard to drive, to close and to easy to hit the wrong gear. I am now using the tri-ax handle on my factory shifter until my B-day in Oct when my wife is going to let me get the MGW. at that time this one wil be for sale.
