Exhaust Combo
Im desiding to run Hooker Super comp Headers ( 1 5/8" primaries 3" collectors) with a Hooker Header 3" to 2 1/2" Reducer which will have a Flowtech 2 1/2" race readies behind that then have 2 1/2" pipes all the way back to 3" 50 series delta flow flowmaster mufflers then 3" tail pipes.
My question is I would prefer to go with the H pipe cause i would like a throaty rumble and a overall general muscular muscle car idle sound, but running the exhaust system i described above on a 351W with the engine specs below would it have that sound or not? Would consider upgrading to a 40 series muffler to get that sound but I want to keep it within daily driver limits, dont want to be setting car alarms off idling by i already have a car that dose that (Engine : 351W, High Performance bearings, Crane oval track series cam 226*/236* Duration @ 0.050, 0.502"/0.520" 110* lobe center angle 2800 - 6000 powerband, flat top pistons with 2 valve reliefs, and not sure about this im still desiding but im leaning towards a Weiand stealth intake manifold Idle - 6800 rpm, and a holley 4160 4bbl 600cfm carb and World Products Windsor Sr heads 200cc port runner, If i go with those heads im looking at 9.34:1 c.r. and 9.03:1 c.r. if i keep stock heads and just port and polish) Thanks in advance |

I think that it would be ok with 2 1/2 all the way back. My 351 breaths a lot more than that combo and I think my 3" is a little to big. Although I may not think the same way when i start spraying it.

I was thinking about going with 3" but then thought no maybe I wouldnt have enough backpressure for the engine running 3" exhaust considering im trying to build more trq than hp and im trying to keep the hp under 350 since I heard alot about my transmission not being able to handle more than 350 hp. If I get around to upgrading the transmission before the engine needs to be rebuilt I have a few roller camshafts im going to go with and I'll be putting out hopefully around 350 - 400 hp.
Not sure about the H pipe or X pipe I read on a hotrod article that H pipes give off more of a rumble than X pipes do well im looking for more of a rumble. Exhaust sounds great stock but just dosent have that powerful sound. when you get on the gas sounds great. Stomp the gas at a redlight and hold the transmission in L1 the tach jumps up to 5500 rpm almost instantly and then its time to move to L2 at at 5500 rpm which is about 70 mph or so. From what I read up on and studied the cam Im looking at isnt going to have a smooth idle its going to have a slight lope, or atleast I hope so and hope that I get enough vacuum if not I can always go with a larger vacuum reserve canister |

My exhaust system is kooks custom headers into a 3 inch x-pipe with 3 inch 2 chamber flow with dumps. There is absolutely no rasp at all. At idle it is a very agressive lope and when cruising it actually gets quieter and almost sounds like its humming. BTW it doesn't have that flowmaster drone either.

I dont mean to knock the 5.0`s but i just dont want this to sound like the common 5.0 exhaust dose, I want different sound cause its not a 5.0 its a 5.8 lol
But thats what im looking for is a exhaust that has a lopy sounding idle and sounds agressive and sounds very agressive when you stomp the gas or when your racing but once you kick into 3rd gear at highway speeds its not excessively loud |

Ya with the 3 inch pipes, if I didn't tell you it had flowmasters you probably wouldn't know it.

Im going to get out today and measure the outside diameter of the stock pipe, I want to say its around 1 3/4" diameter but then again the engine still has the stock 2bbl and exhaust manifolds and dual cats.
But the setup im wanting to really go with is the Hooker Super Comp Headers cause those are the only ones I can find for this year/make/model that I dont have to lower the gear box for the steering. Im also wanting to go with exhaust cutouts, be easy to get unrestricted sound when I wanted it like say when im a mile from where my family reunion is I can uncap them and let the car idle into the parking lot lol. Im also trying to track down some cheap 1978 Trans Am chrome exhaust tips im thinking having those would look great on the car but another one is those pace setter dual exit exhaust tips the yellow accents also look good. |

The exhaust is going in a 78 cougar xr7. Going to be a daily driver but im upgrading the suspension and steering. Also looking for a rack and pinion upgrade if one exsist I might have to fabricate one myself. But its basicly the same body lines as the Trans Am of 78, with the passenger cabin right over the rear wheels
