Best Gears With A Turbocharger?

i tried searching.. couldn't find exactly what i was looking for..

EDIT

sorry, its currently auto, but before the turbocharger, i'm planning on doing a 5 speed conversion

depends on power and set up. a friend of mine had 4.10's in an auto with a s/c and it was great. with an auto you can get away with a steeper gear easy. going to a manual will change that drastically. i have 4.10's and hate them, i am going to a taller slick and probably 3.73'sif i dont get the results that i want. i ran 3.55's for a while, but it will take a lot of power to make the 3.55's work correctly.

definitely 3.55 or under for turbo. 3.73 is good for SC. 4.10 is good for N/A autos

Turbos love RPMs...

I think with the 5.0 a set of 3.27's would be perfect...

Depends on the combination, rpm range, etc.

An automatic will hold the boost when you shift. With a manual it will dump the boost between gear changes.

I am runnin 3:73s on my turbo fox, and I break the tires loose in third gear when the boost hits (first and second gear are pointless). Do yourself a favor and get some 3:27s or maybe 3:55s if your not running too much hp. This is (of course) all dependent on what tires and suspension you'll be running. I have full autocross suspension with 17s and G-force TAs.... not so drag friendly... but fun as hell to drive to work every once in a while

omfg!!! 4.10's with any FI would send ur tires to hell!

For any turbo setup, i would stick under 3.55... infact i would just stick with stock gears. once u hit that max boost its gonna drop a load on that drivetrain and if u have a short gear, ur gonna spin no matter what. But with 3.27's u hit that boost, u'll catch trac and just GO!!!!

don't mean to hijack the thread.. but why should he get something like 3.27s or 3.55s on his car with his turbo? im gonna centri s/c mine but 3.27s are stock and i don't dig em.. is it just different with the 5.0 motors? i was thinking frpp 3.73s or 4.10s in mine..

I explained it... kinda. As soon as you hit that boost, if you have a short gear ratio... ur gonna spin. 4.10's will most def spin like crazy 1st-2nd and probabably some of 3rd, 3.73's will most likely spin like a bitch 1st-2nd (if you have a TC, 3.73's are ideal for a SC). An ideal gear ratio would be a 3.55 for a TC 4.6PI and 3.27's in a 5.0. I say 3.27's in a 5.0 because their tq and hp max is reached at a much lower rpm than a modular engine.

Click the link in my sig, this little clip takes place in 4th gear... listen closely at the end and hear what I say in the video.... and that is why you don't get 3:73s with twins

go with 4.10 gears

Just buy the 4.10s and get some 285 35 - 18 drag radials like I did and freaking blow off the tires in the first three gears. People watching will cheer at you and think your cool. My turbo laughs at my 555r's.
