Last winter, I had the privilege to watch Sammy Vincent (NMRA SSO Racer) do extensive dyno testing with back pressure and different muffler types....
On the chassis dyno...his car picked up a sizable amount of hp and tq simply by adding a set of mufflers and short extensions to his open headers... I cant give any numbers (swore on my life not to) but the gain really-really surprised me.

unless you are running a turbo the proper ratio of tuned backpressure is wanted. this will promote ideal exhaust scavaging producing peak performance. anyone who has ever had an exhaust gasket or manifold leak should know there is a loss in power. the power loss is much more noticeable in lower hp motor like the 4banger and v6's where 10hp or so feels like more of a difference. hell go down to you local bestbuy and scout out the ricers, you know the highschool kids with the hondas and type R fart cannons, wouldn't be suprised if half of them are actually slower than stock

they think because they put on that Huge mofo of a muffler its actually helping them when its really hurting there performance and there Engines. probally 9/10 of them are only putting them on so they can sound like a weedwacker on steroids.

Glass packs a blow through muffler yes...But they are not fart cans...
Glasspacks are one of the oldest muffler designs... SLP and a few others use them... Me personally I am a chamber muffler person... |

A glasspack is a muffler that exhaust gas passes straight through the center of the muffler. Packed fiberglass surrounds the exhaust channel and absorbs some of the high-frequency sound. All mufflers impede the flow of exhaust gas and create back pressure on the engine.
Glasspacks are an old, simple, and relatively inexpensive design. They are very effective at reducing back pressure, but not very effective at muffling noise. Thus, they not only make the engine more powerful, they make it sound more powerful. A glass pack gets louder over-time as the fiberglass material inside the muffler wears out or gets blown out... I dont know much about the fart cans though other then they use stainless steal mesh to get there sound... I just call them fart-cans...I think that is their official name... |
