Exhaust Note Deep But Quiet

i have a 96 v6 with the stock manifolds and cats, custom h-pipe and exhaust (2.25 inch) with flowmaster 40's. my exhaust has the deep flowmaster note, but its barely louder than my stock exhaust. my friend has a 98 v6 with the same set-up with 2.5 inch exhaust and it is very loud (louder than his 04 GT). same mufflers, cats, h-pipe. my questions are why is his so much louder than mine and if i get turn-downs right behind the mufflers would that make my exhaust louder (i have heard turndowns after mufflers and it was loud)?

turn downs give the same raspy high pitch LOUD that you hear..a buddy of mine swapped his 3.5" tailpipes on his 450hp 83 grand prix for turndowns and it now sounds woosy

Different muffler maybe? I had a flowmaster 40 on my v6 before switching to gt take-offs. Flowmaster seems to only have "tone" at certain RPMs.
