Gas Mileage Question
I just bought my '07 mustang about two weeks ago with 35 miles on it. Now it has over 1,100 miles on it. I've noticed that it doesn't get as good a fuel economy as the estimates quoted. It being a V6 with a 5-speed I figured it would get at least 19/29. But so far I've only been able to average 15 mpg. It's a 16 gallon tank and I'm only getting just over 200-230 miles to the tank.
I thought maybe I was driving in the wrong power-band or the wrong gear, but I don't know. I usually try to stay in the 1,500 rpm band, but I'm not sure if that is the best power-band to be in for good fuel economy. Any ideas? Suggestions? Also, are turbonators any good? Their website makes it look like a cheap rip-off. |

that does seem pretty low...
well for one though, the advertised gas mileage is pretty much guaranteed to be an exageration. I've heard that turbonators actually do improve gas mileage, but it does shit for power. I would say Seafoam the engine and gas line...but on such a new car, I really don't think it would need it, but it might be worth a shot. the stuff's pretty cheap. you could also maybe look into getting a cold air intake. apparently that improves gas mileage, although I hadn't noticed much when I put mine on. |

I think maybe I just need to work on when I shift. I've been gradually improving, but not much. I've got 3/4 of a tank right now with a little over 200 miles on it. Still too low for me. I prefer to hit 300-400 miles to the tank. Does the fact I live in Hawaii have anything to do with it?

hmm.. turbonater.... junk. stay away from them. all they do is add a restriction into the air flow... you have to remember you have a heavy car with a smallish engine in it. that said it does seem a bit off with the mileage youare posting. what are your tires pressures at? if they are rather low they might account for it a bit, but not nearly as much as you are stating. good luck though.

I don't have a gauge, but the low pressure indicator light hasn't lit up on my console. Plus I've only driven 1,200 miles on it. I'm not sure if tire pressure could be a problem.

I got a 07 V6 (auto) also, i get around 20-22 mpg on it. More you drive it seems, the better it gets. But it does raise mpg when I go on road trips to Michigan.

Forget the turbonator. I believe the fuel mileage is rated at 16 city/24 highway for your car. If you're doing a lot of city driving, that would explain your mileage. Adding a good cold air intake, and a custom tune with a tuner will increase your mileage a little. I have an 07 GT, and I get 25 on the highway, and anywhere from 8 to 15 in town, depending how heavy my foot is. When I put my intake & tune on, I picked up about 2-3 mpg on the highway under normal driving. |
