Exhaust On A Budget

OK, let me open a can of worms: Local exhaust guy said $600 for cats, H pipe, glass packs and tail pipe. For me that is expensive. I currently have long tube headers, and have been told I really need the H pipe.

Does the H pipe go before the cats? Just wondering if I can save any money...

Any mid pipe (x or h) goes in between your exhaust manifolds or headers in your case and your mufflers and tips (catback). If you are in a state that doesnot have emissions testing, just have an offroad h (no cats)fabbed up. I had a local muffler shop do a complete exhaust system from the longtubes back. He fabbed up a o/r h and flowmasters with chrome dual tips for $350. That was about 3 years ago so it has probably come up some since then. Drove my 68 to the muff shop with open headers - talk about LOUD. :wink

Just noticed you are from VA. From what I understand from folks there, they are pretty strict on emissions so you are probably going to need the cats.

I am in Va, but we do not have emmission testing, but I was told I had to have cats to pass inspection. Cats on the net are $50-60 for the cheapest. I did find a guy that said he could do the whole thing for $400. I will have a 45 min drive to the exhaust shop with only headers, will that be okay, or should I put some kind of pipe on it. I don't care about the noise, just don't want to damage anything.
