Synthetic or Regular Oil

Hey all, i just got my 07 stang a week ago and i am not sure what oil the dealer put in it. Prolly they put in ford recommended stuff.

Just wanted to know if i should put in synthetic or regular oil for my next oil change. I used Mobil1 synthetic on my 98 v6. Should i stick with it? Also what does the 5w20 and 5w30 apply to and which one should i use? Thanks.

Excuse my ignorace, green and keen newbie here

I heard that you need to put some miles on your car before you use synthetic oil.

With your 98, Does it leak oil? if so I would fix the leak or use the the reg oil. Syn oil is thinner and will leak more if there is a leak. If you like syn oil, I would keep using it.

And nobody knows everything.

Put 5k on it than change to Royal Purple it's liquid horse power. Do check your oil level after about 1k with the RP as the engine will absorbe about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart after that your good to go. I run mine for 15k with two filter changes.

Synthetic oil all the way. Synthetic oil doesn't cause leaks. That is a common misconception. Conventional oil plugs leaks with the wax that is put into the oil.

I am a firm believer in synthetic oils in everything but differentials. Synthetic oil is not thinner. It has very good flow capabilities. It has nothing to do with being thin. I run 4 quarts of mobil synthetic 10W-30 and 1 quart of lucas pure synthetic.

If you car leaks oil, then reg oil might be better, right?

No. Replacing your bad seals and gaskets is better.

It would be better, but sometimes you don't have time or the money. You do what you have to do.

I switched to synthetic today. Ford uses Motorcraft, which is their brand. I do not know what my car had in it before (I just bought a used 2004 mustang) but it seems to run rough after putting the motorcraft oil and filter in there. Next time I wont have ford change my oil (but it was free haha)... anyway, Mobil's says this on their webpage about swithcing to synthetic:
Myth: You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to a synthetic oil like Mobil 1.
Reality:
You can start using Mobil 1® in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:
Acura RDX
Aston Martin
Bentley Amage and Bentley GT
Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, XLR, XLR-V, SRX and STS and STS-V
Chevrolet Corvette C6 and Z06
Chevrolet SSR
Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
Chrysler 300C SRT-8 and Crossfire SRT-6
Cobalt SS
Dodge Ram SRT-10
Dodge Charger SRT-8, Magnum, and Viper
Jeep Cherokee SRT-8
Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles
Mercedes SLR
Mitsubishi EVO III
Pontiac GTO
All Porsche vehicles
Saturn Red Line
Viper SRT-10
Hope that helps any??!!

I use Mobil-1 fully synthetic, peace of mind..

Most cam manufacturers don't recommend the use of synthetic oil for the break-in period but that is ONLY for flat hydraulic camshafts (non-roller). Read the instruction below from Crane Cams. That explains the theory behind putting a few thousand miles on before shifting to synthetic, but as you can see it doesn't apply to motors that use hydraulic roller type of cams.

You can use Synthetic oil on all Mustang motors starting from day 1 without any problems. All late-model Mustang engines have roller cams from the factory and so it wont matter which oil do you use.

Using synthetic at any point in time with any engine and any parts no matter if it is new or old is perfectly fine.
