Corrosion

I've been noticing a good bit of corrosion on the negative battery cable. What keeps causing this? Bad thing? Is there a remedy for it.. cuz it looks really bad.

baking soda+water works great too. after u clean it up put some vaseline on there. i did and no more acid

yeah the dr pepper got most of it off, but i ran outta time.. and i just now realized that my dumb ass posted this question in the exhaust forum.. bah..
