Iowa / Illinois / Minnesota Dyno Tuner Shops

Hey guys, I'd been asking around to find out if anyone knew of good tuning shops around here without much luck. I've found a few and was wondering if anyone could provide any feedback on any of these shops. Of course if you recommend other shops within a few hundred miles of NE Iowa that'd be nice too.

ILLINOIS:

Anderson Ford Motorsports
Clinton, IL

Illinois Dyno Center
Port Byron, IL
I've heard bad things about this place...

Straightline Performance
New Lenox, IL

Rev Hard Inc
Rock Island, IL

MINNESOTA:

Hitech Motorsports
Elk River, MN

Speed Shop Specialties
Blaine, MN

RJR Motorsports
White Bear Lake, MN
Is this shop still open?

IOWA:

Midstate Machine
Des Moines, IA

Lund Motors
Waukee, IA

Wrenches
Des Moines

Thanks for the help. Can't wait to mod over the winter and get this thing tuned and running well for the spring!

Anderson Ford and Straight Line are the best two on that list by far. Rev Hard and Illinois Dyno are pretty much the same thing and you have heard bad things about them for a good reason. They both suck. The guy that runs Rev Hard worked on my WRX when I was at school in Chicago and did not have time a few years back. He broke off a bunch of vaccum lines because they had to pull the motor to swap the trans. He proceeded to tell me that the place I had it worked on before did it , which was a Subaru Dealership. He is full of shit. I also have heard he will get turbo's from the junk yard, take them apart and clean them. Then sell them as new or slightly used even though they have so much shaft play they sound like a bag full of marbles when you pick them up and shake them. A friend of mine with a GSX told me that. Stay far far away from those places unless your not going to have one of their "professionals" tune it and bring your own guy.

Myself, I started picking up reading material and do all my tuning myself. I suggest you do the same so you at least get a idea of whats involved. Otherwise go to Anderson Ford or Straight Line Performance. My best friends dad took his 1995 Cobra to Anderson Ford and had great results and a really good experience with everything from the customer service to the parts they make. He made over 500hp on a stock 302. Both Emay and HeavyGT, members here, have had really good luck with Straight Line and pretty much swear by the guys there.

You really should talk to Glen and Erin about getting a Tune at straight line next year when we go up there for the show. If your going again next year that is.

This basically tells me they don't often work on 3 valves and that means you need to find someone that knows what they are doing.

I've heard great things about Wrenches in Des Moines. A guy on SVTPerformance gets tuned there, and he has crazy builds. I think they'd be able to handle my simple setup... I'll pm the Hawaiin though just for good measure since you guys back up his tuning skills.

I've seen a couple of New Edge Cobras at Cedar Falls Raceway. Never seen either of them run cause I only go there to race...watching drag racing bores me, haha. The only cars I watch run are the cars that make their passes while I'm giving the tires a spin and while I'm staging.

I have to iron out my plans for my car, but you're only 3 1/2 hours away and everyone seems to back you so I might need your services in the future

Hey guys, i have been asking around on here, i am from North Dakota, is there any places that do dyno tuning there? I was looking at the places in Minnesota and they are not too far away, but I live in Fargo and was curious if there were closer ones.

My Lund Motors experience:

I have the following mods on my 06 GT...
JLT CAI
Pypes L/T Headers
Pypes O/R H-Pipe
4.30 gears

I took my car to them and felt they were very firendly, pleasant people to deal with. They did several pulls with my car and were very willing to answer questions I had (I had several with this being my first Dyno). After a couple hours they gave me a tune that they said was a nice little step up from the 91 octane Brenspeed tune I already had.

It seemed to drive okay on the way home but I didn't really get on it until I got to some backroads. I stopped, got ready to lay a black mark (while my wife is rolling her eyes in the passenger seat), stomped on the gas, took off like a bat out of hell, and then felt the car fall on it's face.

I pulled over switched to the Brenspeed tune and tried the black mark again. I must have burnt half of my new tread off with that one!

I pulled back over and reloaded the Lund tune. The same thing happened where it fell on its face as the RPM's built up.

I called and spoke with them and they agreed to try to tune my car again but felt it was probably kind of a waste of time since Brenspeed had provided me with a tune I was satisfied with and they doubted they could do much better.

In the end, I wish I wouldn't have taken a day off work, driven an hour and a half each way, and spent a couple hundred bucks - only to end up with a tune I may as well delete from my XCal III. They were nice people and probably very good at what they do. Even doing it via email, I feel Brenspeed is the best choice for 3V engines after this experience though. If I ever have a car that needs dyno-tuned, and there's no specialized company out there, I would not hesitate to go back to Lund Motors. I don't mean to bad mouth them, I'm just dissappointed because, in the end, I feel I got nothing for my money.

They are honest, good people though, which is the most important component of a shop! Keep that in mind.

Minnesota - Modern Automotive Performance(MAP)

Modern Automotive Performance: Your source for turbocharged sport compact performance!

More of a sport compact place, but still an honest reputable shop worth mentioning.

I also get my car tuned at Straightline..... I'm pretty sure, its been there at least 6-7 times, and going again on 6/18 or 6/19 with Mayracn (Erin's Brother). Great guys to work with, spend a good time on the car to give it an opp to cool down before pulls. Plus, they use a Mustang Dyno, which puts your car under load, and now you're getting a more accurate reading. Mike and Nick and the rest of the guys are just a great group to work with. Great experience. I highly recommend them.
