Button Start?

Does any one know of a kit or anything I can get to set up a button start. I want one so bad, they are so much fun. I wish I could set one up like on the Hydroplane I crew for. 2 switches and a button to start it. It just looks so bad ass.

I don't know of a kit, but you could definitely parts-bin something together - the Ford GT uses a push-button starter, so you could get the button and ignition setup from it (you wouldn't want the key to be able to push past "on" to "start" if you have the button).

Other than that, it would just take some wiring.

The one thing I'm not sure of though, is how the encoded keys would work with that.

Maybe someone with more knowledge than I will chime in?

OK. Thought of a nifty start setup for you, sans keys. True, it doesn't use a single button, but it still gives you all the options that a regular ignition switch would do for you. Plus, it wouldn't require too much destructive wiring. I'd suggest unplugging your ignition switch, modding the connector of the switch so you can plug your new stuff directly into the car's original harness. That way you can reverse it really easily. But anyway, parts required:

*3-position switch x1
*Pushbutton switch x1
*Ignition switch (to salvage its connector)
*Some wire to connect it all
*Soldering iron and solder, to connect the wire to the ign sw, and new switches.
*Some kind of mounting setup for the switch and the pushbutton. Suggested: Put the button in the hole that the key took up, and the switch close by.
*Schematic (including wire colors) of your ignition switch's wiring harness

OK. Now that you have everything ready, time to get started. You'll need to go off of your schematic a little bit, but here's the basic setup. The 3-way switch functions exactly as the "Off," "Accessory," and "On" settings of the ignition switch. Wire these accordingly. You'll want the "common" leg of the switch to be the power, "Off" not to be connected to anything (unless the original ignition switch had a contact for this, but I don't see the purpose), "Accessory" to go to the pin on the salvaged connector that matches up with what the original ignition switch's Accessory setting went to, and you guessed it, "On" going to the same pin that the "On" setting of the original ignition switch went to. Yay! Now, you can cycle between the car being off, the radio working, and then everything running (fuel pump, more of the car's systems) except for the car. Now what you're going to want to do is to wire up the pushbutton to the "start" wire (in other words, connect +12V to one side, and the starter solenoid to the other). Now whenever the car's in the "on" position and you push the button, the starter will engage, the fuel pump will run, and so will the car. Yay! I'll try to summarize that for 'ya.

-3-position switch wired to the car's "off," "accessory," and "on" positions.
-Pushbutton switch wired to the car's starter solenoid.
-Switch needs to be flipped on before button's pressed, otherwise you're just ruining your starter, and draining your battery.

OK. Six years as an aviations electrician in the Navy kinda makes my mind work fairly decently at electrical stuffs. Yay!

I know this says for '05 +, but you can use it to make a custom push button start for your car. Not sure what else you would need. I suck at wireing, and try to stay away from it as much as I can.

With the new chip type keys. You would need to make sure simply that the key was in the car with you. New miata's for instance simply have a card you keep in your wallet and no key at all, you just turn a switch.

I think I would utilize the stock key ignition for the on off settings and then simply put in a button for the START position. Essentially the same process as stated above, except I would re-use the factory ignition, so my key would still work. The coolest way would be to have a key pad with a number you need to press in order to make the start button work.

This would work except for the theft chip in the key. You would need to either a) disable the theft security in the computer or b) use the key for on/off/accessory and just have a push button to start the engine.

Heh heh. Or you could really cheat, don't mangle the ignition switch too badly (splice the wires to the harness, basically), and just mount the ignition switch with key somewhere out-of-sight behind the dash.

Yeah, I like the idea of the hidden key. And just the start button. Ultimate in worthlessly cool, would be a finger print reader and key pad. insert key and type in a code to turn it on, read your finger print and push button to start. Over the top, but cool.
